I have element 2018, suddenly I am unable to get audio on the same clips that worked fine this morning. I checked audio hardware. what else could be wrong?

What do you mean when you say you checked audio hardware?
Do you mean you went to the program's preferences on the Audio Hardware page and reset the output and input settings?
The more specific you can be about what you've done the more likely we'll be able to help you.

Correct.
I rerun the video and part of the clip has sound and another does not.

The timeline is the lower part of the interface, here you combine and assemble your video and audio.
