"no supported device has been detected" error message when trying to capture video in Premiere Elements 15

Just installed Premiere Elements 15 and am unable to capture.  I have tried connecting my camera to my computer via my Matrox card with a IEEE 1394 Firewire cable and also to the computer directly using the same cable, getting the same error message.  My camera is a Canon XL1s.  Any thoughts on what I should do differently?

Premiere Elements 15 does not capture tape-based video over a FireWire connection.

You will need to capture your miniDV video using a third party project and then import the DV footage into your Premiere Elements project.

You don't say what operating system you are using. If you are using Windows, the free download WinDV will capture your footage. If you are on a Mac, you can capture with iMovie -- though I recommend purchasing Lifeflix from the App Store.

Can I use my Sony Handycam TRV480 to capture video onto Premiere

Elements  ( which is installed )?  I get "no supported device detected". 

I am using USB. What am I missing?    Thanks.

You cannot use USB on a tape camera only firewire to capture footage.

There are devices but they are guaranteed to make audio and video go out of sync; waist of money.

Get a firewirecard installed.

Sorry to offer a dissenting opinion, Ann. But these days it's all but impossible to buy a computer with a FireWire port.

USB capture is just fine for capturing. Here's one I'd recommend for capture analog or tape-based digital.

Will the firewire card give me a port to use if installed?
My Sony Digital 8 camcorder doesnt have a USB port - does have
a A/V port and DV port. I tried the DV port but no luck.  I am baffled.

In order to capture you need DV (which is firewire) on the camera side and firewire on the pc side.

Unfortunately you still wont be able to capture with Elements as it dropped the capture feature.

Use WinDV instead.

I stumbled on this conversation and your suggestion about WinDV has turned out to be a huge help.   After spending a couple of days trying to capture some digitial video, nothing was working.  My Windows 10 computer, which has every port you can imagine, was connected to a 19 year old Sony Digital 8 Camcorder (DCR-TRV530), using Fireware at both ends - but the camera was just not recognized.  I tried Premiere Pro, Elements, a version of Move Maker and Sony Play Memories - nothing recognized the camera. I  downloaded new drivers and even tried a legacy version of the 1394 controller.  Nothing worked until I downloaded WinDV and gave it a try.  It recognized the camera and captured the video seemelessly. Problem solved !!  I noticed that the last update of WinDVwas in 2003; maybe that's why it worked - because it's as old as the camera.
