Problem in editing with Delete and Close Gap

For some reason I can no longer delete a clip and close the gap with one mouse click or backspace.  If I want to delet a clip I have to hit my delete button or select "delete" from the dropdown menu to delete the clip and then I have to place my cursor in the gap that was created and right click to get a small button that says "Delete and Close Gap".  I can then click on it and it does it.  That's a lot of extra clicks.  The "Delete and Close Gap" option just below the "Delete" button in the dropdown menu is ghosted, and the backspace just doesn't work.  What has happened here?

Would REALLY appreciate any assistance I can get on this.  This forum has been so helpful in the past!

Thanks!

Can you post a screen capture of your timeline so we can see it?

Turns out you were on the right track (no pun intended) with your first response.  I think I've discovered the problem.  I added a track below my main video to put a static image so that when vertical images from phones were inserted I didn't have a plane black background.  That became "Track 1".  Apparently you can only do the "Delete and Close Gap" on Track 1.  So when I answered your question, I did not have any vido or audio on parallel tracks, but track 1 was there just waiting for the image.  The lesson then, is don't add that extra track until you've finished all your editing work on your main track while it is still track1 and then add the new track to go below your main track.  If you have any other suggestions, tips or tricks on this I would love to hear them.

Thanks,

Scott

"any video or audio on parallel tracks"

I didn't think of that one!

Also, do you have any video or audio on parallel tracks that are keeping this from being a true "gap" in your timeline?

Thanks for your response, but no there are no clips on parallel tracks, at least not where I am doing the deleting and closing.

Not sure of what to do, but did you check your keyboard customization?    My second thought is to reset your preferences by holding down the Alt key while starting the app.

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately reseting my preferences by holding down the Alt key while starting the app did not seem to work but maybe I'm doing it wrong.  I dod go to the link and tried to do it that way, but I did not see any change.  And also to answer your followup question, there are no clips on parallel tracks.
