Forum user reported issue re 23.2:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/several-problems-with-text-window-associated-with-c...

I don't recall anyone else reporting this.

Steps to reproduce:
1 - Create captions (I used speech to text)

2 - Undock Text Panel

3 - Close Text Panel

4 - Double-click caption, which opens Text Panel, undocked

Result: Briefly see empty Text Panel and crashes, sometimes with option to submit report.

For Beta, freezes computer for half a minute, empty, undocked UXP panel is visible, then prompts to attach debugger, when close that message, instant crash.

Expected: Text panel would open and be populated.

System info
    Application: Premiere Pro (Beta) v24.1.0.49
OS: Windows v10.0.19045, RAM: 63.80 GB GB, CPUs (logical): 16

I've run into several problems with text windows associated with captions/subtitles. These are all occurring in Adobe Premiere Pro 2023, V 23.3.0 (Build 69)

1. The text window cannot be docked anywhere.
2. If I switch to Export Tab, the window stays in its current position on top of everything else. It cannot be moved and it cannot be closed. Sometimes its position obscures something in the tab that I want to see.
3. When using down arrow to scroll within the window, I can move from one caption to the next, but the display does not update when I down-arrow past the bottom of the visible range.
4. When I close the Window, then subsequently double-click on ANY caption tile in the subtitle track, the window re-opens but sometimes does not repopulate itself, and there is no "refresh" button on the window to force the captions to reload.

I've created a video to explain all of these problems. Here is the link: https://app.screencast.com/fNRHByEEntIJi

Thank you.

@Soulancipation,

Version 23.2 is now dated. The last update to 23.x is 23.6, and 24.0 has now been released. There will be no fixes to any issues you are seeing in 23.2. Some of what you are seeing is probably correct.

I no longer have 23.2, so tested in 23.6.

For example, once a panel is undocked (you can still see the undock command, greyed out in the menu), there is no "dock" command. You get your workspace back to original by using "Reset to saved layout" in the workspace menu. Also, to drag a panel to dock, drag it by the panel name (i.e. the word "Text"), not the header bar.

But I was able to crash PR 23.6 by undocking the text panel, closing it, then double-clicking a caption. This did not happen if it was docked. And didn't happen if it was undocked and was not closed.

1, 2,  and 4 are issues, but at least 1, and possibly 4 should resolve with going to a standard workspace, or if you are already in a standard workspace (e.g. Captions and Graphics), Reset to Saved Workspace.  If that doesn't work, reset preferences.

3 is probably that "Enable Autoscrolling" is deselected. Give that a try.

I also tested and demonstrated the Text panel crash in Beta 24.1 Build 49. Bug reported:

Still problem in Beta 24.2.0.27. I have not tested 24.0.3, but assume not fixed there.

Whenever I import an .srt file (doesn't matter how I import it-- by dragging the file into Premiere, importing via the Text/Captions window, etc.), first thing I notice is that if I open the file in the Captions window, I can't edit any of them and there's a lock icon on the right saying the captions are "read-only".

I assumed it's locked because I didn't place the .srt file on the timeline. So I closed the Captions window and placed the .srt file on the timeline. However, every subtitle on the Caption track is darkened out. If I double click any of them (that'll normally open the Caption window allowing me to edit it), Premiere crashes, closes, and the usual "send error report" window pops up.

Sometimes a window will open up for a split second before Premiere freezes and close down. I thought it was the Caption window, but instead it's called "UXP Panel [random number]". No idea what that is.

I'm on the latest version of Premiere. The only 3rd party plugin/extension I have is called Watchtower. It's used for quickly importing files and folders. It was not used when importing this .srt file so it's not related to my problem but just putting it out there since the post instructions suggest I mention any 3rd party plugins I have.

See this bug report:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-beta-bugs/text-panel-issue-crashes-pr-23-2-23-6-24-0-bet...

The workaround is to keep the text panel docked.

So I suspect you undocked the text panel. If you did not, report back.

The "locked" issue is probably as designed (i.e. PR does not allow you to edit srt if not in a timeline). I have not seen that reported before, but I see just what you see.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The bug that @Stan Jones has been reported internally as well and is a very high priority ticket for the Captions team.
