608 captions not embedding

Hello,

I have a 608 caption track on the sequence.  I want to export and have the captions embedded into the file (not burned or sidecar).

I export it as a MXF OP1a and under the captions tab select "Embed in Output File".

When I play it in VLC I see no 608 captions.  I've compared the file with other 608 captioned files I have, and those files have 608 embedded on VLC streams (under codec information) but my file does not.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is happening here?

Thanks so much.

Brady,

Thanks for all the info. Please do post back with any info you get. We don't see enough from users who are doing closed captions.

The file you attached plays the captions in VLC. VLC shows 4 caption tracks, but there is actually only CC1. (There appear to be 4 audio channels in one track; PR imports it as 4 mono channels.)

I exported a random sequence as a quicktime file from PR with 608 embedded. VLC shows a subtitle track 1 in English (correct), but when selected, no captions show.

No idea what to do with the MediaInfo listing, but it is different:

MediaInfo shows this for the caption track:

Text
ID : 1-CC1
Format : EIA-608
Muxing mode : A/53 / DTVCC Transport / MXF
Muxing mode, more info : Muxed in Video #1
Duration : 28 min 47 s
Start time (commands) : 2 s 936 ms / 2 s 936 ms
Start time : 3 s 3 ms / 3 s 3 ms
Bit rate mode : Constant
Stream size : 0.00 Byte (0%)
Count of frames before first event : 90 / 90
Type of the first event : PopOn / PopOn

MediaInfo shows this for the PR caption track:

Text
ID : 3-CC1
Format : EIA-608
Muxing mode : Final Cut
Codec ID : c608
Duration : 3 min 46 s
Start time (commands) : 300 ms
Start time : 1 s 235 ms

Bit rate mode : Constant
Frame rate : 10.284 FPS
Stream size : 0.00 Byte (0%)
Source stream size : 45.6 KiB (0%)
Language : English
Forced : No

Thanks for getting back to me!  When I dropped it back into the project and then the timeline the 608 appeared again.  So it is embedding.  But when I run it through the Carbon Coder conversion process for our television, it's not appearing on our station playout.  I imagine there are some other issues going on.  I will have to consult further with my engineers.

It's good to know that VLC doesn't playback 608 for you on your videos.

The captions that have appeared on VLC are 608 from a file that was ripped off an old tape.

Thanks for the help.  This may be a more complicated issue with our playout server.

I've never been able to get embedded captions to play in VLC. I'd love to get a copy of a short version of one of yours that works! How were they captioned?

The easy test is to reimport the file back to PR and see if the embedded captions are there. That's the first step.
