Question

Timeline jumps back to playhead anytime I click while playback / I press play or stop

PP2022

I am not sure if this has always been like that, or if it's a new thing but it's driving me nuts.

For example:

I watch my edit in the timeline and then in some part I zoom in to inspect some detail while it keeps playing. If I now hit pause the timeline automatically jumps to where the playhead has moved to while I was inspecting and away from the section I was looking at.  I would like the timeline to stay on the section I was looking at.

If I click in the timeline in order to relocate the playhead while it's playing, it will always jump to the current playhead's position and not where I clicked.

In order to achieve this I always have to zoom out, so that the playhead is visible, then stop, move the playhead to where I want to be and zoom out.

This has cost me so much time and I am about to lose my mind about it. I really can't remember ever having this problem in 15 years of editing.

I hope I am making myself understand. I have been searching extensively on the internet but I don't even know how to name this problem.

For a moment I thought that "selection follows playhead" was the solution but it really wasn't. I am also under the impression, that sometime for some reason it will work just as I want and remember it, but then it will go back. Maybe I am hitting some secret key without knowing it.

Your help is highly appreciate. If you don't understand please ask,

Thanks

Ive been waiting and waiting on a fix for this bug. It's an incredibly huge time wasting annoyance.

Zoom out, find the playhead, stop and zoom back to where I was. Fun stuff (not).

PLEASE FIX THIS.

Welcome to 'products as a service' and 'bugs as features.'

I've completely given up waiting for a fix and am working out of a 2021 build of Premiere (15.4.5) which does not have this issue. I only work out of a newer version when clients specifically request for captions... since Adobe has removed Captions generation for the build that doesn't  have this jumping bug. It truly is like playing Whack a Mole trying to choose a version that has functionality, stability and quality of life. I still have three versions installed for just such reasons.

Anyone have an update on this? Or are we all just waiting on Adobe to finally get this fixed? What steps do we need to take for them to notice this is an ongoing issue and do something about it?

@SuperSamC somebody here said to install the latest version, they had it fixed.

it's not fixed. You can mouse click now to stop playback without it jumping back but if you push space it still does the same infuriating thing. Starting to think that it will just do this forever now.

There's a big discussion thread on this already. But I'm officially reporting this as a bug.

When I'm playing the timeline in Premiere Pro (2022 or 2023), and I zoom into a spot that I want the playhead to stop and then click the timeline, the timeline jumps back to where the playhead was playing. I want the timeline and playhead to stay where I'm clicking! This problem in the later versions (beyond 2021) completely destroys how I edit. And no, I'm not going to use the keyboard shortcut "Move Playhead to Cursor" as a solution. This needs to be addressed ASAP.

I can not believe this isn't fixed for over 2 years of Premiere Pro updates. Watch the video below if what I'm saying is confusing.

https://vimeo.com/1009141643

You will see that v.2021 of Premiere Pro works perfectly in the way that it should, while the latest versions are bugged and ruins a lot of many editors' workflow. We refuse upgrade past v.2021 until this is fix. Please repair this issue!

Versions used in video above:

  • v.2022 - 22.6.4 (Premiere 2022)
  • v.2023 - 23.2 (Premiere 2023)
  • v.2021 - 15.4.5 (Premiere 2021)

Platform used:

Windows 10 (Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045)

I have a similar problem that's been going on for awhile now. The playhead sticks and jumps around.

HOW ON EARTH IS THIS NOT FIXED YET!? It's making me go insane.

I will never upgrade beyond 2021 until this is taken care of.

This! Exactly this! Smart move on making the clips different colors so you can see how it jumps.

Thank you! It's unreal how long it's been without fixture.

I officially posted this in the "Report Bug" section.

It's separate from this discussion thread. Hopefully this cactches the attention of the software developers.

I have posted on here before and constantly see everyone elses replies...

Just want to say for anyone thats happy with the "work around" or defending this... I am sorry to tell you thats not good enough... This issue never existed, and Adobe even developed a setting that allowed you to choose whether or not you wanted the interface to behave like this...

I refuse to work around method, I want the software to work the way it worked for many many many happy years before this issue presented itself.

This BUG is hugely inefficient for ones workflow and productivity...

This is still an issue for me as well and I'm really hoping a fix is on the way. It didn't used to be like this, and it has totally interrupted my workflow. Even if Adobe just added an option to keep the Playhead from doing this, would be really nice.

This same question is on Reddit so if you don't understand the question at hand, go look at the video that goes along with the Reddit entry, it shows the issue exactly.

That;s exactly what it does for me and it drives me crazy. Not only does it jump back to the playhead when you press pause, but it also juimps back to the playhead if i were to click on the playhead (basically acting like a pause)
