Issue with Playback Performance in Premiere Pro Version 24 and Later

Since version 24, there is a significant playback performance issue when the timeline scroll setting in Preferences - Playback is set to “Smooth Scroll.” This issue did not occur in version 23, but it seems to have resurfaced.

Steps to Reproduce: The more clips you place on the timeline, the slower the playback becomes. Once the number of clips exceeds a certain threshold, the playback button becomes unresponsive, and you may need to terminate the Premiere process to close the application.

This issue does not occur when the timeline scroll setting is set to “Page Scroll.”

Additional Note: After upgrading to version 24.5, I encountered another issue where Premiere files created in version 23 could not be opened after downgrading back to version 23. Therefore, I am reluctantly using version 24.5.

PC Environment:

  • Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics Card: 4070TI
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-14700K 3.40 GHz
  • Memory: 64GB

Thank you for your response.

First, I made a mistake in my previous message. The issue is not that “playback slows down,” but rather that the “play/pause button becomes unresponsive” or “the play/pause button stops working.”

I am editing multiple 30-minute to 1-hour mp4 files. These are game commentary videos recorded with OBS at 60fps. I work on this for more than 3 hours every day, 365 days a year.

The clips on the timeline become extremely detailed, as shown in the attached screenshot. When the video length exceeds 10 minutes, the play button becomes unresponsive, and the longer the video, the more unresponsive the play button becomes.

Even without generating keyframes for ducking or performing BGM fade processing, the play button’s responsiveness deteriorates.

In addition to the play button’s responsiveness, “zooming in and out of the timeline during playback” also becomes sluggish. I use this zoom function quite frequently during editing.

---

I tried various things. After the play button becomes unresponsive, restarting Premiere resolves the issue. The play/pause button works as intended, and zooming in and out is smooth.

This personally resolves the issue for me. However, in Version 23, restarting was not necessary. If the same issue can be confirmed, please consider fixing it.

Hi dango-itimi,

We're sorry to hear about the performance issue. I tried testing both the scroll settings, and they seem to be working fine. Could you please confirm if you are experiencing this with any specific project or all of them? What type of media files (format, frame rate & frame size) are you working with & are there any effects applied?

Thanks,

Sumeet
