Keyboard shortcut issue in 25.3

Community Beginner ,
Jun 23, 2025 Jun 23, 2025

It seems I can nolonger use the same shortcut for multiple panels since updating to Premiere 25.3.

I'm specifically trying to get the zoom-to-fit shortcut working how it used to. In 25.2.3 and previous versions, I was able to use shift+z to zoom-to-fit the program monitor, the player monitor and the sequence panel all with this one shortcut, depending on which panel was selected. Since updating to 25.3, in the keyboard shortcuts menu, these functions are now all listed under "Application" as opposed to under the various panel sections, meaning Premiere now tells me "that shortcut is already in use by another function" when I try to fix this problem. It now wants my to use three different shortcuts for what was previously one. I sincerely hope this is a bug and not a concious decission made by Adobe.

Hi @camerons17794153 - I see what you’re saying I’ll go ahead and file a bug report for this. I agree there should be documentation when keyboard shortcuts are changed.

I am experiencing an issue that may be the same or related:

Upon upgrading to 25.3 from 25.2.3, my keyboard shortcut for "View > Magnification > Fit" ceased to work for the Program Monitor. It does still work for the Source Monitor.

I compared the zoom to fit options in 24.0.0, 25.2.3, and the current 25.3.0.

In all 3 versions, View -> Magnification -> Fit is application-wide. But, by menu or shortcut, it only works if a monitor has focus. If the focus is in the Timeline, Magnification is greyed out. How would it know which monitor to effect?

In 2024 and 25.2.3, there are separate shortcuts for Zoom monitor to fit, one for the Program monitor and one for the Source monitor. So each of those shortcuts works only for its respective monitor, and only when that panel has focus. And yes, it would be easier to just use the shortcut for View -> Magnification -> Fit.

In 25.3.0, they are all application-wide, and are still separate. The Zoom monitor to fit shortcuts have default assignments. The Zoom Source Monitor to Fit shortcut works, as designed, everywhere I checked, with focus on program monitor, source monitor, timeline, and project panel. This seems good. BUT as @GrahamWillcox_OMC_Studios says, there appears to be a bug with the Zoom Program Monitor to Fit shortcut; it works NO-where!

@camerons17794153,

I wonder if you're talking about the Zoom to Sequence backslash. Otherwise, I don't see how there was ever an option to zoom either monitor when the focus was in the timeline. Yes, you could add the same shortcut for BOTH program and source monitor. Since they are both specific panels, there is no conflict, it would work with either panel in focus. But not from the timeline.

Hi @camerons17794153 -
Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.
Please see, How to Report a Problem.

As Stan has said this used to be a panel shortcut and has changed to application

If these shortcuts don't work for you please provide more information are you using a custom keyboard?  Does it work if you use the Adobe Premiere Pro Default?

The problem you're likely running into is with the xml file that holds premiere's shortcuts. It's a bug many have run into in the past, and especially in the 25.x cycle because they changed so many.

You can read up a bit in the below post, where it's also discussed how you can dig into the xml and remove the problem hotkeys
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/quot-toggle-transform-direct-manipulation-qu...

Alternatively you can just wipe your custom shortcuts and remake them but that's obviously a massive pain

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Here's a screenshot of my custom shortcut setup in 25.2.3, which I've been using succesfully for the last ten years.

Screenshot 2025-07-10 at 11.01.55 am.png

I was able to use the one shortcut for different functions, depending on which panel was selected. You can see, I have Shift-Z assigned to "zoom to sequence", "zoom monitor to fit"(program monitor), and "zoom monitor to fit"(source monitor).

Now, in version 25.3, as you and Stan mentioned and as I mentioned in my initial post, these functions have been moved to "Application". So they can nolonger share the same shortcut, as Premiere doesn't see them as panel-specific functions anymore. When I try to assign the same shortcut to these different functions in 25.3, I get this message:

Screenshot 2025-07-25 at 11.12.24 am.png

It seems wild that "zoom program monitor to fit" and "zoom source monitor to fit" now need two different shortcuts. And by the way, the specific panel still needs to be selected for the shortcut to work.

I've tried using the Adobe Premiere Pro Default shortcuts in 25.3 and they indeed use different shortcuts for Program and Source monitors:

I really can't understand why "zoom to fit" and "zoom to sequence" have been moved to "Application" in 25.3. "Zoom in" and "zoom out" are still listed under their individual panels, so why have other zoom functions been moved to a different section? I'm still able to use + and - to zoom in and out on each panel, why not zoom to fit?

I suppose what I'm asking is - can these functions please be moved back to their original panel sections in future releases? I'd love to keep working with the same efficiency I have been for the last ten years.

For me, this issue does not happen with a defualt layout, only with my custom keys settings I've been migrating forward manually for a long time. Digging into the threads here regarding the contents of the .kys file, it seems like the good folks in this thread have identified the problem XML reveals extinct and conflicting calls

To me, this is a symptom of a larger problem: we don't have a clean mechanism for retaining and managing settings across versions in Premiere, after the loss of the Creative Cloud feature.  A central preferences manager that encompasses all of the myriad button, workspace, keyboard layouts, etc would be a welcome feature.

Ok, yes - was able to resolve this problem by deleting several entries in my .kys file and then reassigning them in Premiere Keyboard Shortcuts.

It seems a little much to have to track and prune XML files just to maintain a custom set of keys across software updates.  Re-entering manually is not practical.  Migration of custom layouts should be handled cleanly by the software.
