Locking Many Tracks Kills Performance

Advocate ,

This one really grinds my gears.

Specs

Windows 11

Latest Nvidia Studio Driver

2080ti RTX

24 core 3960

PrPro 23.5

Steps to reproduce

1.Create timeline with 10+ audio tracks and 3+ video tracks.

2. Lock all of your audio tracks. (shift + lock)

3. Try to scrub

4. Slideshow ensues

5. Try to re-size audio video/break

6. Slideshow

7. Unlock all video tracks

8. Normal performance returns.

Theory: Something about how premiere draws that hash pattern is very 1993 and is not drawing properly causes the whole interface to drag even the program monitor. Will post video shortly.

Here is a video of how bad Premiere reacts to locked tracks and in general.

It goes from decent CTI performance to about 3fps and this is with a very manageable 4-5 audio tracks locked. Then premeire throws a weird memory error even though I just opened this project and then as I was going to add more audio tracks to show how much worse it gets when you have even more tracks the whole thing froze.

Here's another video just showing how bad interface performance is once you try to lock out tracks. Makes it very hard to move the playhead or do anything. Scrubbing performacne shouldn't die because you toggled something on the interface.

Has there been any fix?

The core problem has been fixed in Pr 24.0. Please try a recent version and let us know if it works for you. There may be some related problems remaining, which are currently being worked on.

@jstrawnThe scrubbing performance is much improved thanks.

Locking tracks however still makes the timeline interface overall render much slower when doing operations like zooming, panning, scrolling etc in the timeline panel. Hopefully that can still be improved as well! dragging the scroll/zoom bar goes from 30+FPS to maybe 3FPS.
