P: Audio of AVCHD files in .MTS format with PCM audio does not play correctly - sounds like noise

When MTS files are playing in an app like VLC Player, they're just being decompressed for playback which MTS is designed to do very efficiently.

When MTS files are imported into a video editing application (if the application supports it), they're being demuxed for editing.  That is, the audio and video streams are separated such that they behave as independ files and are more like, but still not the same as, formats meant for editing.

Definately try importing and playing whatever source you have to see how it performs on your system.  If converting MTS for editing, I'd recommend going with ProRes 422 LT or if disk space is very limted ProRes 422 Proxy.

Spank it into Handbrake, convert to MP4, and you're golden.

Hi, been reading through this and, despite being on 25.5 .MTS files are still problematic. They never used to be though. About 6 mths ago it was all fine, then something changed and its knackered it.

My scenario is that if I play .MTS in VLC player the audio is fine. In Premiere it doesnt even bring in the audio to the timeline if a clip is dragged & dropped from a bin into a new timeline. I've had this with other video clip formats and, oddly, if I "New Sequence from clip" that does create a video and audio track which I then have to cut and paste into my first timeline. It's clunky and moreso a workaround than a solution.

This also happens if I create an entirely new project and use the Import Wizard as another post suggested.

Interestingly, the same happens with Resolve.

Why can VLC handle this but not pro-grade software?

Not the PCM waveform. You can hear the audio, just not see it 🙂

Is this fixed with the latest non beta release?

Latest update means you can hear the audio buy waveforms are naccurate.
Changing to camera audio to Dolby instead of PCM worked a treat, thanks george_9462 🙂

Try updating Adobe Premiere version 25.4.0, it's already in Creative Cloud, the sound from AVCHD is normal

I had the same problem.  It seemed that the problem was in the camera.  Our cameras audio settings were set to Linear PCM.  Switched it to Dolby audio and the problem went away.  Our cameras were set to Linear PCM for years with no problem importing to Premiere.  This changed in one of the latest updates.  We had to run the raw footage through Handbrake in order to get it to play in Premiere.  After switching the camera setting, no more problem.
