P: There is no image in the preview section of the project

Community Beginner ,
Oct 10, 2024 Oct 10, 2024

Hello, today, while I was working on a project in Premiere Pro, the preview image suddenly disappeared. In Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, the video preview does not open in the part where the preview screen is located. When I press the space bar, the sound of the video starting is heard, but there is no image. I searched in many places, but I could not find a solution. I deleted it and reinstalled it, it didn't work, I cleared the media cache and it didn't work, I downgraded or upgraded the version and it didn't work either. I tried and many other things but I couldn't find a solution. I am sending the screen recording as an attachment. I would be very happy if you could help me.

(my system properties
i7 13700h
gtx 4060
32 ddr5 ram
1tb ssd
The video I was working on was a very simple edit, so I don't think it was caused by a system freeze.)

Hello all, this is Thomas from Adobe engineering team. We've been investigating the issue and I’d like to share an update.

In Summary, many of you began experiencing preview issues, where audio plays but no image is displayed, after certain OS or driver updates. This problem affects both After Effects (AE) and Premiere Pro (PPro), and reverting to previous software versions does not resolve it. The issue occurs immediately upon launching the application. If you're encountering a similar issue,

Yeah, looking for updates om the Intel drivers, I think got me covered. With some updates on drivers, it works again!

I DID! Different solution btw..

They told me to open:
Device Manager > Display adapters > Intel UHD Graphics > right click and choose update driver > browse my computer for driver > Let Me Pick > Choose Microsoft Basic Display Adapter > Next.

After install, restart computer, and try Premiere! IT WORKS! SOLVED!

Thank you guys for help & suggestion! It means a lot for me!

I called HP support and they remotely connected to my computer. They downloaded the HP Cloud Recovery from the Microsoft Store to update the BIOS to a new version. It was a 3-hour process. Previously, they had me enter the boot menu by pressing specific keys that they guided me through during the phone call. I had to use a USB drive for the entire process. I recommend backing up all your files before calling. I just downloaded Premiere again (2024 version) and now IT WORKS! The problem is solved

Hey @Ahmet_Burak,

Take any media off OneDrive and reconnect it. Media and project files should not be associated with cloud storage. See if that works for you.

Cheers,
Kevin

Hi @Rach McIntire , @Sumeet Kumar Choubey

could you confirm that issue has been rised internally ¿?

do you need anything form my side ¿?

Can you escalate or work it to/with Microsoft for review between both vendors?

Thanks for your understanding,

Frank

Hi,

No positive input on this matter?

From my side, I managed to get the video preview to show again. I found out that you can select the GPU per application in Windows, so I selected the integrated Intel GPU and it works.

But as all of you can imagine, this is not a solution since I specifically bought a laptop with a dedicated GPU to edit videos with Premiere, but I can't use it.

Does Adobe say anything about this?

Thanks,

Frank

Hello, I have recently updated from Premiere Pro 2023 to 2025 on my Laptop, and after that, I keep getting no playback, but the audio works fine.

The playback is either a black screen, a grey screen (the same colour as the UI window), or a glitchy image.

As the image shows, the playback is on a black screen in the program or the source.

TC1343_1-1744199116821.png

If I create a new project and use a sample media provided by the Software, the master will not show a black screen and show the interface before I click create project. its very glitchy.

TC1343_0-1744198984849.png

It's only the visuals that are not working; the audio works fine as it plays the sequence. This has been quite a frustrating problem since I still have some projects to work with.

I've tried the following to troubleshoot, but none of these worked to solve the problem:
1. Reinstalling the software (I tried the newest 2025 version and 2025 version, but the 2024 version also doesn't work.)
2. Updating my CPU and GPU Drivers (Both Intel and NVIDIA drivers are up to date. I check and update it every day. It usually solves the problem, but not anymore.) I've had issues regarding the drivers on other games, but it doesn't have a problem opening my games this time.

3. Changing Audio Hardware (Although there's only one option).

4. Clearing media cache files

5. Changing render software, both don't work.

6. Rebooting Premiere Pro or Windows. I tried countless times, but it didn't work.

Here are my device details; please let me know if you have any insights on how to solve this problem; I would really appreciate it.

Laptop: Victus 16 by HP Gaming Laptop - r0xxx

System: Windows 11 64-bit 24H2

CPU: Intel i5-13500HX

GPU: Intel UHD Graphics, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU

RAM: 16GB
 version in question: 2025 (25.2.1)

Thank you.

1. Have you tried a completely fresh install of the NVidia GPU graphics driver?

Clean the Laptop of all NVidia driver installations and select fresh clean install using the Custom installation selection.

2. What does your Preferences/Playback selection look like ?. Are the settings correct?

3. Try Reseting your Workspace - I have had weird issues with Workspaces getting corrupted in the past.

Just some ideas to try if you have not already gone through this

yes, I have tried all 3 points you mentioned.
1. I have reinstalled every GPU drivers with the "Clean install" clicked.
2. I have resetted Preference and Playback settings to default.
3. I have resetted Workplace.
None of them works.

Someone merged my post to this mega thread. Changing to Microsoft basics display driver fixes it, but this is just a temporary fix,  I cant adjust brightness or use night light.. I paid for a laptop that had stronger CPUs and GPUs for editing videos and now I have to disable them to edit videos?
Im hoping adobe can fix this issue since I see that the problem has been there since 2024.

Very frustrating ..

Have you checked your latest BIOS Updates and settings?

Are you also using the Studio Driver (not gaming driver) - I assume so

There were some reports on the web that some later NVidia Drivers were causing issues on RTX Geforce 4000 series and users should go back to older drivers - reports claim 566.36 was more stable

Can't verify this.

There were also reports that earlier versions of Win 11 24H2 messed up graphics for a lot of people.

How long have you been on that version?

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with Adobe Premiere Pro where my video does not display in either the Source Monitor or the Program Monitor. The audio plays correctly, and the video appears properly in the timeline and project panel thumbnails, but there is no visual output when I try to play it. Video is in mp4. H264 format Here's a screenshot of the issue:

Things I've already tried:

Switched renderer to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only (File > Project Settings > General).

  1. Reset workspace layout via Window > Workspaces > Reset to Saved Layout.

  2. Confirmed that Source Monitor is enabled from the Window menu.

  3. Cleared Media Cache (Edit > Preferences > Media Cache > Delete).

  4. Re-imported the file and created a new sequence.

  5. Tested with other H.264 .mp4 videos (same issue).

  6. My graphics driver is up to date.

Please help! I have been encountering an oddly specific circumstance of my video preview going blank with  my laptop alone vs when it is connected to additional monitors.

I can only see a video preview (see screenshot) when my laptop is connected to at least one additional monitor.  If I start up a project on the laptop unconnected to any additional monitors, the preview is blank. If I start a project with the laptop connected to an additional monitor, the preview appears and the preview remains visible when an additional monitor is disconnected. I have tried resetting to saved layout, and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere Pro.

Please help as I am unable to edit projects without being connected at first to an additional monitor.

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with Adobe Premiere Pro on my new HP Victus laptop. The video playback doesn't work properly—either I get a gray screen, or the video freezes while only the audio plays. Is this a common problem? Any simple fixes? Thanks!

Try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

Hi,

I don't understand how Adobe is not offering any response to resolve the issue or providing any information about whether their development teams are reviewing or working to fix it.

We are paying for a subscription to a product that we cannot use. Can someone from Adobe, who is monitoring this forum/thread, at least tell us what the official channel is to open a support ticket to resolve this issue?

Thanks,

Frank

Hello all, this is Thomas from Adobe engineering team. We've been investigating the issue and I’d like to share an update.

In Summary, many of you began experiencing preview issues, where audio plays but no image is displayed, after certain OS or driver updates. This problem affects both After Effects (AE) and Premiere Pro (PPro), and reverting to previous software versions does not resolve it. The issue occurs immediately upon launching the application. If you're encountering a similar issue, but it only began after previews were working fine for a while, it may be a different problem, and the workaround provided here might not apply.

While some of you have successfully fixed the issue by updating or rolling back your graphics drivers or BIOS, these steps haven’t worked for everyone. Others have temporarily resolved the issue by disabling the Intel graphics driver or switching to the Microsoft Basic Display Driver, but this often introduces new problems. Since the Intel graphics driver is critical for laptop functionality, we do not recommend disabling it.

Considering this issue appeared suddenly and has impacted multiple versions of our applications, we suspect it may be related to unexpected changes or corruption in system graphics components or drivers during recent OS or driver updates. While we haven’t yet identified the exact cause, we recommend the following mitigation steps.

Mitigation Steps:

First and foremost, although disabling the Intel graphics driver or switching to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter may temporarily resolve the issue for some users, we do not recommend this approach, especially on laptops. If you’ve made either of these changes, please restore your Intel driver by enabling and updating it to the standard version.

Depending on your laptop model:
If your system includes both an Intel integrated GPU and a discrete GPU (such as AMD or NVIDIA), try adjusting your graphics settings to prefer the discrete GPU for our applications. This typically results in better performance and may help avoid the issue.

1. Right Click on your desktop and open Display Settings, then open Graphics Settings

2. Browse and add both Adobe Premiere Pro and its compainion GPUSniffer to the list.

For Premiere Pro, the two apps would typically be located at

        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro 2025\Adobe Premiere Pro.exe

        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro 2025\GPUSniffer.exe

For After Effects, the two apps would typically be located at

        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2025\Support File\AfterFX.exe

        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2025\Support File\GPUSniffer.exe

3. Open GPU Preference drop down menu for each application and select the discrete Nvidia or AMD GPU.

4. Please see the following screenshot as an example.

OS Graphics Switch.png

Alternatively, some laptop models include vendor-specific companion applications that make it easier to switch between hybrid mode (integrated + discrete GPU) and discrete-only mode. This can help improve stability and performance in our applications. For example, on the Victus HP Gaming Laptop, you may already have the OMEN Gaming Hub application installed. To switch to discrete GPU mode:
1. Open OMEN Gaming Hub
2. Navigate to Graphics Switcher
3. Select Discrete

OMEN Gaming Hub.png

If your system only has an Intel integrated GPU and updating to the latest driver did not resolve the issue, we recommend rolling back to a previous driver version to see if that helps.

--------

If none of the above solutions resolve the issue and you’re willing to assist us further, we’d appreciate your help in collecting additional information. Please generate a DirectX Diagnostic Report (dxdiag) from your system and share it with me at thyang@adobe.com. Your support and patience are greatly appreciated. We’ll keep you updated as we continue to investigate.

To collect dxdiag

1. Run dxdiag.exe from your Win machine

2. Click on Save All Information...

3. Collect and share me the generated txt file.

Can you use an earlier build? You don't have to update.

There was a series back around 2017, where I had to stay on a previous version for 4-5 months due to very specific hardware/media issues. But I still worked away.

On my Victus the Omen "discrete only" seems to fix this problem.  The "graphics setting" fix via right clicking on the desktop didn't seem to make a difference on its own.
