Premiere Pro 25.1 Bug: Vertical Pixel Aspect Ratio is reduced by 1%

12/10/24. I updated Premiere Pro to 25.1 today.

1920x1080 Video no longer fills a 1920x1080 aspect ratio timeline on top and bottom. It has been squashed vertically by 1%.  The image is squashed by 4 pixels at the top and 4 more at the bottom. The sides are fine.

Increasing the vertical scale by 1% fixes the issue.

This is video in a project that looked fine yesterday before the update.

Please fix this immediately. Thank you.

Fits perfectly in 25.1 on windows.

Maybe a mac thing?

Trash preferences and/or media cache.

Check the scaling

What is the origin of the file?

Hi @Glass Amoeba

Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue. What type of file and footage are you using to drop into the 1920x1080 sequnce? Is it happening to all file formats or just a certain camera?

Thanks,

Ian

Hi @jvleditor,

Thanks for the message. Welcome to the forums.

I'm curious, were you using any adjustment layers in your sequence?

If you have time, please give the team a few more details. See, How do I write a bug report?

I hope we can help you shortly. Sorry for the pain points.

@Glass Amoeba,

I have not updated to 25.1.0 due to an ongoing project, but I'm curious, so tested in 25.0.0 and Beta 25.2.0.44.

I used a clip that is 1920x1080 (checked in MediaInfo) and created a sequence by dragging to the new icon.

I also created a red color matte as 1920x1080 and placed it on the track below the clip.

I set the Program Monitor to 50% (so I can clearly see the edges), and I see no color showing. If I reduce the clip scaling to 99%, the red shows. I get the same results in both versions.

Let's see what someone with 25.1.0 sees.

Stan

HI Ian,
So far it is happening with XAVC S HD MP4 files from my Sony FX3. I will check some of my ProRes backup media and let you know.

I’m encountering an issue with Premiere Pro 25.1 and Media Encoder 25.1 that wasn’t present in 25.0. I’m working with a 2160p sequence that includes a mix of 4K and 1080p media. After upgrading, I noticed that 1080p clips in the sequence now display a black bar at the top of the file during playback in the Program Monitor and in the final exported file. The export settings are H.264/ProRes 422.

To troubleshoot, I downgraded both Premiere Pro and Media Encoder to 25.0, and the issue disappeared with the same exact project file. This leads me to believe the problem might be related to changes in the H.264 engine introduced in the new update 25.1. My system details are as follows: macOS 15.2, MacBook Pro 14” with an M1 Max chip.

The issue seems isolated to version 25.1, as I’ve successfully exported files in 25.0 using the same project and settings. Let me know if additional details or steps to reproduce would help.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.  It seems my issue may be related to this recent forum post: Premiere Pro 25.1 Bug - Vertical Pixel Aspect Ratio is Reduced by 1. This issue appears to affect how Premiere Pro 25.1 handles certain video formats, resulting in scaling problems like black bars or incorrect aspect ratios.

Issue: 1080p H.264 clips in a 2160p sequence display black bars on top and bottom of clip during playback and in exported files after upgrading to Premiere Pro 25.1.

Adobe Premiere Pro version: 25.1

Operating system: macOS 15.2

System Info:

CPU: Apple M1 Max

GPU: Integrated Apple GPU

RAM: 32GB

Hard Drive: Internal SSD

Video format: A mix of 4K and 1080p media, primarily H.264.

Workflow details: Editing a 2160p sequence with scaled 1080p media.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Opened up my previously edited project in the new version 25.1.

2. Clicked on latest sequence.

3. Noticed 1080p clips were not scaled correctly.

4. Exported the sequence to H.264 and ProRes 422 where the scaling issue was present in both files.
5. Downgraded to Premiere Pro 25 and Media Encoder 25 and reopened project.

6. Sequence was perfectly fine with no scaling issues.

Expected result: 1080p clips should display and export without black bars.

Actual result: Black bars appear on 1080p clips during playback in the Program Monitor and in the exported file.

Are you sure settings are UDH (3840x2160) and not 4K (4096x2160).

The latter is not exactly 16x9.
