I consider this a bug because the entire platform and sending to ME worked fine for years until you added the atrocious export panel in Premiere.  Now, with the preferences in ME set or unset "specify output file location" sending to ME from premiere defaults to the desktop.  this is a HUGE waste of time.   Can you explain or fix this bug of how to get "send to media encoder" working properly defaulting to the last saved location or the prproj file location as it worked fine for years and years.  Thank you.

By default, choosing File > Export > Send to Adobe Media Encoder will use the current user's /Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/24.0/ folder as the default file export location.  It will not honor recent export locations set in Media Encoder nor use the custom location set in ME's preferences.  However, you can change the default location for Premiere jobs by setting a different location from Export mode (or Quick Export).

For example, if you wanted all your queued AME jobs from Premiere to default to a "Batch Export" folder on your desktop, you'd do the following:

  1. Select a clip in your Project panel and open Export mode
  2. Set the Location to /Desktop/Batch Export/
  3. Switch back to Edit mode

From then on, any clip or sequence you send to Media Encoder via File > Export > Send to AME will default to that "Batch Export" folder on your desktop.

Keep in mind that all clips in Premiere share the same global export location regardless of what project they're in.  However, each sequence in Premiere gets its own unique export location when you export via Export mode or Quick Export.  If you don't want your default export location to change in AME, avoid opening clips or sequences in Export mode or Quick Export in Premiere.

Larry,

Thanks for popping in!

That said, I would never ever want to "default" any export to the OS/system/programs drive. If I for some weird reason actually wanted to export to a Documents folder, I can find it.

But nearly all users I've been through workflows with over the last decade plus, want either to export to their projects folder for that project, or like me, an Export folder set on a drive only used for that purpose.

So the default is not something a lot of would ever want.
