text disappeared after typing the letter ff

I was attempting to type the word "different" in a text box, but as soon as I typed the second "f," the entire text vanished from the box. Even just typing "ff" caused the text to disappear, although it was still visible in the essential graphic. Please advise and thanks

ff is an example of a ligature. See my post here:

The methods remain the same except the general preference is now:

Edit -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Text -> Ligatures checkbox.

If you don't want to turn them off, post back.
