Hey all,
Summary: I'm running into an issue editing MXF files in Premiere Pro 24.5 and up.
The last version that I have not had this issue with is 24.2.1 which I am currently using. I've tested this in all subsequent versions to see if it was fixed, and I still encounter this issue, this has been happening across multiple machines on my team.
Details:
Footage recorded on a Canon C200 and Canon XA-70, MXF files 3840x2160 29.97, artifacts are introduced during editing and playback (see screenshot and video render examples). No other video files have produced the same errors
Attached are two video clips; one export shows the artifacts in an example render file, and the other one shows another export without artifacts for a different project. I attached a screenshot of what that section of the timeline looks like in Premiere, and you can see the artifacts are present during playback.
I'm guessing the issue is MXF = MP4 long gop in a different wrapper, and it's not edit-friendly, and these artifacts are introduced during playback. This looks like bad compression and playback issues. When viewed in Premiere, the artifacts sometimes appear, but they do go away after a moment, and they don't always show. As shown in the export example, sometimes they appear in exports. Sometimes I can render the timeline and no artifacts will show. This likely has to do with Premiere unpacking and playing back the footage, as if the read speeds aren't fast enough? However I currently have no issues in older versions of Premiere.
Troubleshooting:
- I've tried replicating the issue with the footage on a local external SSD, internal SSD, network server, all producing the same results.
- Different timeline settings to match the source
- Clearing the media cache, resetting preferences, and resetting the workspace, I've done multiple clean installs of Premiere
- Changed the renderer settings to software only
- I have transcoded the footage to ProRes in Media Encoder (current version), but that will bake-in the artifacts in the renders.
The only solution I've found is to transcode the footage using Media Encoder (version 24.2.1). I would really like to update to a newer version, but at the moment I am unable to edit half of my team's footage. Aside from using an external recorder to record in a different wrapper/codec, or keeping a machine with an old version of Media Encoder installed, I am out of options, unless I just need a new graphics card.
PC Specs:
Current version where I encountered the bug: 25.1
Windows 10 Version 22H2 Build 19045.5371
Intel i7-6700K CPU
32.0 GB
NVIDIA GTX 1070 Driver version 566.36
