Attaching .srt files to sequences (Premiere Pro 14.9 or earlier)

Hello!

I'm going bananas trying to combine my .srt file to my sequence so I can EMBED the CC on export.  My understanding is that I have to export an .mxf file but I just can't figure out how to combine them with my sequence before exporting.

Thanks!

Ok, Stan Jones!  Here's what I have after I've placed the video on the sequence and clicked NEW>CAPTIONS.  Hit IMPORT SETTINGS next?

Yes, re create the video/sequence first.

No, re create captions. When you import an srt, you do not create a new caption stream: the caption stream is created by the import.

1 - set the caption import settings

2 - import srt - This results in an srt file being adding in the project panel bin.

3 - drag the srt file from the project panel to the video sequence in the timeline

4 - in the program monitor, click on the wrench icon

5 - Closed Caption Display -> Enable and

6 - Closed Caption Display -> Settings. Then pick the appropriate type (CEA-608 or CEA-708 depending on what type CC you have) and which stream (e.g. CC1).

7 - In the timeline, drag the caption stream so the first caption is at the correct time position.

By combine, do you mean add the caption stream to the sequence?

In the newest PR, there is a new box in the caption panel that allows you to set the import characteristics. To embed in MXF, you need to set the srt to import as Closed Caption 608 or 708, depending on what you need. Rod's link is on the right track, but things have improved since 2015. Then again, others have not....

Open Captions (the default for srt) are always visible in the monitor. Closed Captions are only visible if you set them to "on" in the program (or source) monitor wrench icon settings. And you can only set to 608 or 708 one at a time.

On export, set the captions tab to "embed."

Lots of gotchas here, so ask follow up questions as needed.

Thank you both!  I'm going to dive in now and see if it makes sense.  I am somewhat challenged on this front and have trouble looking outside the box.  Stand by for further questions!

I'd found that already but it WAS part of the issue so thank you.  I hope I'm almost there!
