Question

Audio in .mov files not working after using another app

I cannot figure this one out.

I open my project containing .mov files (with audio and video) and mp3 files. Everything works fine in the viewer and the timeline. But if I switch focus to any other app - it can be checking my email, Internet browser, or just a folder on my computer, and then focus back on Premiere, suddenly I can't hear any of the audio form the .mov files! Not in the viewer or timeline. The mp3s work fine.

I've attempted just waiting, hoping it was some sort of lag. Nothing.

The only way I've been able to get the audio working again is by restarting Premiere.

I would love to not have to restart Premiere every time I need to check my email or browse the web.

An update after speaking with Adobe support a few times.

Apparently, Premiere Pro does not support video from iPhones. Any footage from an iPhone has to be processed through Media Encoder or Handbrake, etc.. The latest support tech said it is a codec issue which Premiere cannot read.

Apparently, this is something Adobe is working on. A report of my issue and a feature request was sent to the engineering team.

For reference, I sent one of my clips to the support team and they had the same issues on their end. Media Encoder is a workaround that does work, but it is a very lengthy process. For someone like me who has deadlines, it's just not a good option.

I'll likely have to switch to another editing program until Adobe fixes this issue.

Again, my footage was shot in 3k from the Filmic Pro app. I have not tested video clips coming straight from the iPhone camera app itself. Perhaps that footage would not have this issue. But that would also be low quality footage...

Hope this helps someone!

It sounds like your audio hardware settings might be changing. Do you have any special audio hardware or capture cards connected to your machine?

Can you go to your preferences and take a screenshot of the Audio Hardware section after the problem occurs?

Also, is this on a Mac or PC. Either way, can you go to your system's prefs and the audio section and post a screenshot of the Output section?

I don't have anything additional connected to my machine. I am running Windows 10.

Here are those screenshots...

Well, I suppose that makes sense, since you are still hearing the mp3 audio.

Is there anything unusual about the .movs? After you don't get any audio, can you try removing one of the clips and re-importing it to see if just that clip has sound?

What version of Premiere are you on, and are there any updates?
