Best workflow for canon 5D mark II in premiere pro cc?

Hi there

Is it still (as it used to be) best practice to transcode all 5D mark II footage to ProRes422 before editing?

I can see that the program can handle the original format but does need rendering (yellow bar).

However when I transcoded a sample file I still got the yellow bar on the sequence- is there no equivalent codec that will retain full quality and not necessitate rendering?

I am using a pretty new Mac desktop with a 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 so there shouldn't be much issues with speed. it's really about making the workflow as smooth and glitch free as possible..

Thanks

M

Here's the work flow I use and recommend.

1. Copy the full card to an external drive, or whatever you use for backup and archiving.

2. Copy the full card to the internal Media drive on your edit system.

3. Use the Media Browser to Import the media, with Ingest turned on and set to create the appropriate aspect Cineform proxies.

4. Edit away...

Yellow bar is quite normal.

Red, yellow, and green render bars and what they mean « Premiere Pro work area

If your machine cannot handle the footage use Proxies.

PROXY

Imo no need to transcode.

I use Nikon d800 to atomos via hdmi and don't use SD card, but if I remember right both the Nikon and canon make mov h264 4.2.0 (8 bit) stuff on SD cards. You're better off making pro res 4.2.2 as what you add and edit ( graphics, etc.) will like the 10 bit space better. You don't have to worry about yellow bar usually, unless your editing becomes choppy and lagging etc.
