Black bars on side of video

Community Beginner ,

This seems to be a common question and I'm very new to adobe premiere and somewhat confused on how to resolve the issue.  When I see the preview of my video, I see black bars on the side, although I had scaled all footage I used to avoid this while creating the video.

What resources can I use to to learn more about video sizes and how to avoid this?

Is there a simple fix for this problem?

First screen shot shows the black bars in preview. If i changed it to scale to fill... then I lose text on the bottom from where I have different phrases come up alligned with audio..

You are editing your footage in a 4:3 SD sequence with a resolution of 720x480 and are exporting to HD at 16:9 with a resolution of 1920x1080. Ths gives black bars and bad video quality output.

So, are your source video 720x480?

If the source video is 1920x1080, go to Sequence > Sequence Settings and set the Editing Mode to Custom and change the Width to 1920, change the height to 1080, change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to 1.0.

Thank you so much for the advice. I made that change and now all the clips I have in my video... are completely incorrect in sizing and position, does this resolve when you export or does everything have to be edited and scaled again?

How does the footage look when you open it in the Source panel? Black bars there as well? 🙂

No, that wont be resolved. You always need to know the properties of your source footage, iow if it is 720x480 of if it is 1920x1080 or any other size. right click on a clip in the Project panel and choose Properties and look for Image Size, Frame Rate and Pixel Aspect Ratio. Knowing this is the key, now and for future edits. 🙂

It is possible to resize/reframe clips in the Effect Controls panel, but without knowing the properties of the footage it´s a hit and miss to start reframing/resizing.

almost all the clips I had used were 1920x1080, so now all the many hours of work getting everything just right is sort of reset, which is scary.  When I start scaling footage back to where it needs to be, will the output be terrible with black bars as before?

THank you so much for your help

No if the source footage don´t have black bars. (Yes if the source footage has black bars.)

One way to reset properties is to select the clip on the timeline and use the Reset button/buttons in the Effect Controls. (See the attached image) Mind you that if you use Scale to scale up footage later for reframing it will cost some quality in the end.

Before doing big changes like this it is good to duplicate the sequence so you still have the original to go back to if needed. Right click on the sequence in the Project panel and select Duplicate.

A very good way for those new to editing to get the proper sequence framesize to start is to simply drag/drop a clip onto the blank timeline panel. Premiere checks the clip properties, and makes a sequence with the same framesize, framerate, and audio channels as the clip.

You can also right-click a clip in the bin, and select new sequence from clip, which does the same thing.

now that i changed the settings to have every sequence export as 1920x1080 all my sequences are... off center, not where they are supposed to be and all the panning effects I added are gone.. does this all have to be re-done?  and If i scale the clips back to where they are supposed to be, will that degrade the quality again?
