Black Magic Pocket Camera / Cinema DNG (compressed)

Community Beginner ,
Nov 12, 2013 Nov 12, 2013

Is there a method to get the Pocket Camera CinemaDNG files to work in premiere ? (or Speedgrade?) They work as individual frames in Photoshop.

Apparently they are "compressed" CinemaDNG files.

To bring the answer over to this thread to close the loop.

Only Cinema DNG files from the Blackmagic Cinema Camera are currently supported in Premiere Pro CC and SpeedGrade CC.

AfterEffects and PhotoShop use a different importer than Premiere Pro and SpeedGrade. So if you make a request for one (Premiere Pro) by default it will count for SpeedGrade as well.

Hi BalukMagic,

Import them using the Media Browser. See if that works for you.

Thanks,

CC 7.1.0 (141).

The latest.

Please note these raw files are from a new camera (the newly released firmware on the pocket camera was upgraded today, not to be confused with the other blackmagic camera which already had raw before)

Would you be willing to upload a small sample file that I could look at? You can PM me the link.

Also, please let us know what firmware version you have.

Thanks!

Same issue, both AE and PS work fine, but SG and Premiere pro 7.1 will not load the frame.

I have uploaded a sample DNG file to my server,

http://www.symonty.org/dng/test.dng

Submitted a bug report here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

Lets see what happens next.

******BUG******

Concise problem statement:

Premiere Pro will not open nor decode Black Magic DNG files from the BlackMagic Cinema Camera.

Steps to reproduce bug:

1. Import or drag the sequence of DNG files from the bmpcc into premere pro

2. They will be recognized as a sequence of DNG files

3. Error message appears.

Results:

Unable to Deocde , or File missing metadata error sequence is not usable.

Expected results:

Files should import into the bin for use in the edit.

Files are fully decoded and usable in After Effects and Photoshop so the files are compliant.

Hi,

Currently no method to import Cinema DNG fies into Premiere Pro CC or CS6 works.

The files will import into Photoshop or AfterEffects.

Please expedite providing a fix, as well have just completed a transition to Premiere for editing.

Thanks for your help, but  I posted this the day before, so it would be helpful for the other poster to keep to one thread.

Is there any update on this at all? We've had another CC update to Speedgrade, but it has not appeared to fix this issue. Is there a way to confirm when this will be fixed?

In case you are not aware of, Ginger HDR is capable of importing almost any RAW files into PrPro, and with the Playback Resolution set to 1/2 PrPro can play them back in real time on a not quite powerful machine.

I did not know that. this is a feature i need very badly in  Premiere and Speedgrade. I don't like working in Resolve, and I've taught myself Speedgrade.

I hope Ginger HDR can fix that for me. Will test it

Out of curiousity: have you tried converting BMPCC CinemaDNG into DNG via Adobe DNG Converter? My guess was if DNG Converter uncompresses BMPCC CinemaDNG files during conversion, and the resulting files are approximately 15% larger. But I'm on CS5.5 and can't test if PrPro CC can import them 'natively'.

I have not tried that. Ginger HDR does indeed let me import the compressed CinemaDNG files into PrCC. Unfortunately, dynamic link to speedgrade and the media is offline. And it also will not show the footage in the source monitor.. Just when on a timeline,

It does show footage in the Source Monitor, it doesn't send it into via double-click, hence you have to drag it and drop.

Regard to SpeedGrade, well, if I'm not mistaken, John is on CS5.5 as well...

John Hable, the Ginger HDR developer.

By the way, did you have time to test Adobe DNG Converter - I'm curious.

So there is a new update under way. Can anyone confirm if it is v7.2.2, the latest update that I received yesterday?

I still can't seem to open the raw files from my Pocket Camera.

7.2.2 is just a bug release that doesn't contain major new features. The next release of Premiere Pro that we revealed last week coming soon includes support for the BlackMagic Pocket Camera, as well as other CinemaDNG enhancements such as source settings (eg exposure controls), as well as supporting proper colour science for a wider range of DNG files from other recorders.
