BRAW Codec: Media Offline and Linking throws error "File format not supported."

Hi, I've been cutting BRAW BMPC6K footage in premiere. Today I've been having a lot of stability issues. Premiere changed the color of my footage when loading, and a lot of my preview files stopped working. Seems strange that all this happened after a new update got pushed out. I restarted, and now my footage is offline, and I cannot link the media again. I've been bouncing back between the two available versions of premiere that I can find, and installing different versions of the codec to no success.

Wow, that's a mess. Ouch.

Using the original media in Resolve isn't an issue if you've used it in Premiere. Resolve will do it's own thing.

As to exporting ... Premiere exports stock broadcast specs Rec.709/gamma-2.4/100-nits media. I've had a fair amount of exports from Premiere that I worked or tested in Resolve. Never had any issues.

Took a couple minutes now I'm at a computer to find the post on checking the installation on BlackMagic's free plugin. On my system, the installation by the BM plugin put the folder listed below one level up ... and of course, if things are not where they are expected to be, it won't work right.

When I moved that folder, the BM plugin worked. This has been an issue for several others, it may be what's causing your troubles.

"It seems that your installer doesn't install the Blackmagic files at the good place. You should try to run the installer in Admin mode, or maybe look into your computer for the files called "BlackmagicRawPremiereImporter" and "BlackmagicRawPremiereSourceEffect". If you find these files, there should also be a folder called "BlackmagicRawAPI". These files and folder should be in the Adobe Mediacore folder (move these 2 files and the folder here)

Windows : C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore
Mac : /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore"

I did get it to work eventually with the installer, so my footage is back up. I can't render with 1.6, and then the color is off in 1.5.2.

Do you have any experience bringing cuts into davinci for color aftering using the autokroma plugin?

I'm from the Autokroma Team.

If you want to export your timeline with BRAW files to Davinci Resolve (for color grading for example), you will need to export your timeline as XML. There are 2 things you need to know about :

1. If you have braw footages with 23.96 or 29.96 framerates, you will need to correct the "Media Start Timecode" of all your braw footages. That's can be done with our Autokroma plugin, with the "BRAW Studio Panel", you just need to click on a button. There is no way (except doing by hand) to do this with the BM plugin.
(If you don't have BRAW 23.96 or 29.96 framerate footages in your computer, you should not need our plugin for this).

2. All color corrections you have made in Premiere (with the "Source Settings") will be lost, except if you "export the sidecar" (this feature button is available in both Autokroma and BM plugins).

Also, if you want to transfer a Premiere Pro project from the BM plugin to the Autokroma Plugin, you should export the timeline as XML, then install Autokroma BRAW Studio, and finally import the XML into a new project. All color corrections made with the Blackmagic plugin will be lost, except if you export the sidecar before.

I'm on my phone so no I can't provide links. Very easy to find, just scroll down through this forum looking at thread titles. Go through the BM BRAW and BlackMagic posts.

Changing the plugins does mean redoing bits. Actually try removing the BM files from the Plugin folder, then install the Autokroma plugin.

Launch Premiere and create a new project. From the Media Browser navigate to and select the previous project file, then import the sequences. You'll need to make fresh settings for those clips of course.

Takes a minute or two to change to the new project and some time doing the new settings in the RAW files, but that's better than futzing with busted stuff.

Although finding Nicolas's response on how to manually correct the bad BM raw plugin install may work and would be quicker.

There hasn't been a new version of Premiere out for some time. Are you talking about the newest BlackMagic BRAW plugin version?

I do find the Autokroma plugin much more stable and like the availability of presets.

One of the issues with the BlackMagic plugin is it doesn't always install itself properly. One of the Autokroma engineers has a couple posts in another thread on BM BRAW where he goes through the process of properly installing the BM plugin manually. That might help you a lot.

Also, when the BM plugin is fritzing, create a new project, import some BRAW, and see if it functions properly in a different project. If so, import your sequences from the older project and see if they work.

Premiere 2020 came out just a few weeks ago (not sure of exact date), and it was automatically pushed to my computer.

I'm not sure about autokrama, I read that I cannot install and pickup where I was before.

Do you have a link to that thread?

Premiere doesn't even see the footage to import it. I can watch it in file explorer.
