Question

Cannot open after moving the entire project to a new hard drive

Hi,

I am quite new to Premiere Pro and I am facing an issue which I cannot solve:

I just wanted to open a project which I had finished in april 2017.
Today (august 2017) my client asked for a little change so I wanted to open the project
which didn't work.
I get this error message: "the project could not be loaded it may be damaged or
contain outdated elements
"

In the meantime I had moved the project folder with all its files (clips, proxies, graphics)
from one external hard drive to another.

When I moved (just) the project file back to the original HD it opened just fine.
I relinked all media to the new HD, saved the project and moved it back to the new HD.
I realized that it would open as long as the old HD is mounted. I can unmount the
old HD while the project is open and continue working but when I close it and try to

reopen (old HD unmounted) I get the error.

There has been a  Premiere Pro CC update between april and august 2017.

Here's my system:

MacPro (late2013)

16GB RAM

Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6

Premiere Pro CC 2017.1.2 v11  (build22)

Has anyone a fix for this?
It's driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance!

I think I have isolated what couses this problem.

Tiki, I suppose you have used some elements of your CC library in the project.

After starting a new project from scratch, and trying to make that error message happen again, I did my usual workflow step by step,  (including exposing XML to DaVinci resolve for colour grading and so on...

I guess I have isolated the reason of not being able to reopen a project once switched to another drive, and it seems to be the use of CC library in the project.

OK that's a good start, now, until further notice, I will not use cc library objects anymore, but still remains, how do I open my previous projects??

This is getting so annoying... I have this issue on all my projects. it's like when I created them I have to put them on a drive and never move them around to another. Stuck with the original drive.... stuck and cannot get any backups done

Hi,

I have the same issue on MacBook Pro 2018. Adobe Premiere CC 2018 ver.12.00

I created a project on an external hard drive. Works perfectly. Then used the project manager to archive my project on a second external disk with all the content, clips, audio...

When I try to open this project, I get the message :the project could not be loaded it may be damaged or
contain outdated elements
"

Strange thing... I noticed that when my original drive is also connected, then I can open the project again. Checked where the files come from... my 2nd drive not the original one!

As soon as I disconnect the original drive, I get the error message back.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for some help

When you have the project working could you do a 'save as' to the new hdd.

Hi Richard M Knight,

unfortunately "save as" doesn't change anything. As soon as I unmount the original HD and then try to open the project file I get the error.

Weird!

Check all your cache/preferences locations. Are any on the old drive?

Since it is not the project file or the media, it must be something else!

I would also make a copy of the project file, unzip, and look for the old drive.
