Capturing Video From VCR Through HDV Camcorder Through 1394 Firewire

Hi. I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions. To be clear, I solved the problem, but not using Premiere. Simply put, I was asked to digitize a VHS tape. I set up a VCR, ran AV cables out to an HDV/DV camcorder that has an AV to DV function, then connected a firewire cable to the firewire port on my desktop. It's been years since I've tried this, but it worked! The camcorder was recognized!

Problem is, I don't need to control the camcorder, i.e. make it play or stop. I merely needed it to act as a conduit. What I would've liked to have happened was the capture to begin recording whatever was being displayed on the screen. For me, it refused to capture anything and only indicated the tape was ejected.

I'm a pack rat when it comes to my computer, so I busted out a program I haven't used in years. Pinnacle Studio. Studio 12, to be exact. I don't even know how high the number is now. I went to their capture program and it too has the ability to control the camcorder, but since there's no tape in the camcorder, it simply recorded whatever was playing through the camcorder, which was the VHS tape. In the end, I used a seriously dated program to capture and digitize footage while CC is completely up-to-date and way ahead in terms of technology. Anyone think there could've been a way to capture the footage through Premiere? I worry that someday I'll have to replace this computer and I doubt I'll be re-upping Pinnacle Studio.

I don't have the latest version installed but I know six months ago Premiere Pro could make use of Firewire.

Some free programs

I have NOT used either, but many say to try these for SD capture http://windv.mourek.cz/ or http://www.exsate.com/products/dvcapture/
I HAVE used http://www.scenalyzer.com/ and it works well, do change the default Fat32 to NTFS setting

or your captured files will be broken into 4gig pieces
-I have NOT used the scene detect function in scenalyzer, so don't know how well it works

Dont need a tape in the hdv camera.

Just hit the record button in the caputure window and then hit the playbutton of the vcr.

VCR needs to be set to line out (or something simular).
