I wanted to try and create karaoke text using open captions where the text changes colour as the song goes. This doesn't seem possible.
Is the only way to do it to - create a title using the title tool then duplicating it in another colour (and placing on next video level) and using a linear wipe?
Would be great if there was a feature using captioning to do this.?
I'm using Premiere Pro CC 2017 v11.0
Thanks I ended up just going with using the title tool with linear wipe option - just seemed the easiest at the time. But, I am interested in using the captioning feature in future.

There is many different solution but due to your case, I think what you mentioned it's the easiest, in my opinion.

I don't think captions allow you to do this. Here's what I recommend with your current workflow.
1) Instead of changing the text color with the title tool, add a tint effect and with the linear wipes transition completion keyframed from 0 to 100, save it as a preset by selecting both effects. The most important step is to make sure the Type is set to Scale.
2. Make all of your other titles timed to the music.
3. Select all those titles and option/alt click to duplicate them and drag them to the above track (release option last)
4. With all the duplicate titles selected in the timeline, go to the effects tab, select the preset you saved and drag it onto the selected clips. It will apply the effect to all of them. Since scaling was selected when you created the preset . The transition completion should match the length of each piece of text.
