Hello,
I've had this issue for a while now where if I keep dragging & dropping new media files in the editor, it has a chance to freeze my entire computer for more than 30s, then follows by blacking out both of my monitors, crashes a lot of other programs in my background, and then recovers slightly by opening only one monitor back (the other one is no longer detectable), but only shows a black video when trying to preview my project again. I have to restart my pc every time this happens to fully recover from it.
And yes, my Premiere is up to date.
For those wondering what my specs are, they are the following:
CPU: Intel i7-8700
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER
Memory: 16gb

Try and use the Media Browser which was designed for importing media.

Try to update your graphics card driver, if it's the latest try rolling back to the previous stable driver and see if it works for you

I've run into this before on Windows. Double clicking in the Project Panel and importing didn't cause this problem. May not be ideal but it is a work around.

Also make sure your Playback Preferences are set properly for your dual monitor setup.
It wouldn't hurt, either, to make sure you have the latest Nvidia Studio drivers installed instead of the Game Ready drivers.

I have the exact same problem. Never had it before but now it happens at least 4 times a day, only when I'm working with premiere. I upgraded to windows 11, don't know if thats the problem. Everything else is up to date.

Drag/drop from Finder/Explorer works mostly sort of, but has always been the least reliable way of getting media/assets into Premiere.
Using Favorites folders in the MediaBrowser panel or right-clicking in a bin, "Import" ... both tend to be more stable than drag/dropping from the OS.
Just adding this as ... what works, works.
