Error retrieving frame / Frame substitution recursion attempt

New Here ,

Since updating to Premiere  22.4.0 every time I open an existing project or even when I start a new project and import new clips (.m2ts) I immediately receive alerts ine the events panel informing me of the following:

Events panel:

"Error retrieving frame 1 at time 00:00:00:01 from the file"...(filename & location)

"Error retrieving frame 2 at time 00:00:00:02 from the file"...(filename & location)

"Frame substitution recursion attempt aborting after multiple attempts on file".

It seems to struggle with a number of clips.  Is Premiere now silently insisting that we transcode all footage into ProRes first without actually telling us that is waht we need to do?

I've seen some supposed fixes for this problem, which simply proposes switching from "CUDA playback" to "software only" in the Project Settings panel.  Quite frankly this isn't a solution, Premiere is supposed to work with the NVidia GPU cards that we pay so much for after Adobe told us that we all need them to get better and faster performance.

Another problem I've had for several version of Premiere now is the inability to create preview thumbnails for clips.  If I scrub through a clip in the project window and select "Set as Poster Frame", nothing happens and the same problem occurs if I use the keyboard shortcuts.  The only way it works is to use the Preview Area to set poster frames fro clips, but this takes longer and is more tedious.

At a time when DaVinci Resolve is creating better and improving free software, Adobe seem to be going from bad to terrible.  Absolute garbage from a comapny that is suposed to provide industry standard software.  I've now wasted another afternoon on unsuccessfully trying to find a cause and fix for Adobe's problems instead of actually doing something creative.

Hi Andy,

Sorry. Can we have more info about your system and media? Which camera was used, for example? That might help the troubleshooting process.

Thanks,
Kevin

Have had this issue so much lately with Premiere Pro (Version 22.5.0 Build 62) and .MXF files. The .MXF files are from our Canon C70 cameras. It is IMPOSSIBLE to edit the .MXF files. On the last project I ended up just going through the proxy workflow. Started having this issue I think some time in 2020 maybe? Am currently editing on an Apple M1 Max running macOS 12.4 with 64 GB memory. Footage is on a 48 TB RAID 5 hard drive but have had issues with the footage on any hard drive (usually edit on 4 TB San Disk Extreme external). The only way to actually edit is to proxy everything. Shouldn't have to go through all of that just to edit some .MXF clips.

Doug, I feel your pain It is beyond ridiculous.  The quality of Adobe Premiere's stability is an absolute joke.  Tonight, all I needed to do was make a few tweaks to a project and then export it out......If only it were that simple.  Now I'm faced with blank screens everytime I want to play a source clip or play anything in the timeline.  After searching around the net and multiple trial and error experiments, it appears that the same'fix' for this is the same thing that worked back in 2017 (yes, it's been going on for at least half a decade and they still can't get it right!) and it is to switch from CUDA rendering in the project settings window.  then when I attempt to export the videos in Media Encoder, they keep on freezing.  Clearly this hasn't properly resolved the issue and turning off CUDA processing in favour of "Software only" is not a fix anyway as we bought our expensive graphics cards because Adobe told us to buy them so that it would massively speed up our workflow.

You've clearly invested many of throusands of pounds into your business and Premiere is simply failing to deliver what it advertises.  I think it's time we all vote with our wallet or start seriously looking for refund claims.

So far I'm still waiting for a reply from Adobe after I told them pretty much every component in my computer as they requested and not even a notification to say they are looking into it. No doubt, they will tell us that we need to go out and buy more expensive, faster cards, well sadly none of us can afford faster cards now, because after breaking the bank to buy all this kit that we need to play and edit simple .mxf or .m2ts footage, clients don't want to pay us because we can never get their videos edited and we spend every waking hour trying to find workarounds and fixes for Adobe's own problems.
