Question

File video dimensions (width/height) too large.

I am currently evaluating Pro CS4 coming off of Power Director. In Power Director I imported multiple ".MPG" files that imported fine. I was able to create a sequence and publish to DVD. I am not a professional editor but do appreciate the professional qualities and feel of Pro CS4 and am looking to stop using Power Director.

When using the Media Browser, I navigate to the folder where the .MPG files are located and select them. I get an error that reads "File video dimensions (width/height) too large.

Can someone assist me in the correct file format to convert these to so Pro CS4 can import? I currently have Movavi installed for a converter. I have not purchased it and would gladly take recommendations from all of you prior to purchase.

Thanks,

Johnny

I had the same message yesterdeay and it was driving me crazy because all my usual 'stand by' approaches weren't working. Here are things that I've done in the past that have seemed to work even though they aren't actually related to importing, capturing, or video footage dimensions.

    1- Clean out Media Cache

2- Open project and import files individually instead of through the pop up media link box that opens with the project

3- The winner for this week's issue :MOVE EVERYTHING TO A NEW FOLDER. Why this worked I have no clue but here are the circumstances that led up to my issue:

For my department once our shows have aired and we are ready to back them up we use the Project Manager to created Trimmed Projects so all footage, graphics, etc are in one folder labeled with the show name and we can archive the shows on our Data Tapes. ( HP LTO4) This is the ONLY time our footage is ever on a tape, we record to compact flash, import the .M2T files onto our server, then onto our editing suites, edit our shows/commercials/promos, then make our back up archive versions that are stored on the Data Tapes.

If we need to pull an old archive we get the trimmed copy restored to our editing systems from the data tapes. This was done for me and it works very easily a majority of the time. Every once in a while we will have an issue with a missing file, but this is the first time (in 2 + years of using this system) that I've had this message on opening one of these projects.

I've had the message before when moving projects and renaming files that have been used in a project, but never like this, where absolutely nothing would work.

Today I simply made a new folder on my Media drive and copied everything from the project folder (project, graphics, footage, everything) into a new folder, opened it up, and watched it work. I only had 1 file out of hundreds that did not import, indext and conform properly.

Like I said earlier, no Idea why any of the above would help with a 'dimensions' problem, but this is just a quark of Premiere (I've had the same messages on Premiere 2, and 3, so far haven't had one on 5- I've worked with Premiere since 2005)

    Hopefully this will help someone

There were times when this didn't work out. If that happens, try doing the same with the OSX DVD in your Drive and boot in Safe Mode (Hold down Shift).

    Mac OSX 10.6.6 // Premiere 4.0.2 here

I've been having this issue a lot of times. It usually happens to me, when there's some problem with the permissions. Normally the problem is beeing solved by open up "Disk Utility" and "Repair Permissions" (on your System HDD).  Glad I could help.

I suddenly received the same error message and tried everything. Nothing worked--even old reliable files were getting the same message.  So I rebooted and the problem went away!

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and fairly new to Adobe CS4.

I keep having this problem aswell, no matter what format i use (i record with a JVC HM-100) every single MPEG-4 file i make it says "File video dimensions (width/height) too large."

It even says that with the MOV files i can make with this camera.

For instance i have no clue what sequence presets i have to use when im recording with the following settings:

    File format: MOV

    System: 1080-50/25

    Record mode: 1920 50i HQ

nor have i any clue on how to fix this problem.

I could really use some help on this one.

(if you can help me, please do so in the most basic way you can. Im still new to all this)

    Welcome to the forum.

Have you updated to the CS4.2 version? That fixed many, many things, and added a bunch of new, useful features.

    Good luck,

I have exactly the same problem with my Premiere CS4 File video dimensions width/height too large. I'm working with 4.2.1 Version. Mac Leopard. With exactly the same settings and the same file sometimes gives the error/sometimes not. For what I see this problem is very old and affects different platforms (windows XP, windows 7, Mac). I'm sure its just another bug of this CS4, a very buggy program, very unstable that has maked me loose a lot of time, please Adobe, do something and do it now, I'm going to Final Cut or whatever program that just lets me edit when I want to edit, and don't converts editing in a nightmare.

@croquetarra I agree its too bad this was so buggy. This problem happened to

me after I updated my Mac Pro OS to Snow Leopard. I finally tried

uninstalling and re-installing PP CS4 and that worked. Its worth a try.

DID YOU RECENTLY UPGRADE TO MAC OS 10.6?

I did and that is what I think caused this problem for me. After updating the OS, is when this problem started.  I tried everything in the forum.. I updated to the latest version of Premeire, and OS 10 (10.6.2  And still couldnt import mpeg or my mov files - that were already in my existing projects even.

I finally reinstalled Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 - as much of a hassle it is - IN FINALLY WORKED!!

    Hello,

I am new to this forum, as well to Adobe Premiere 4. With that said I am also new to video editing, as I am a photographer by triad. Last summer I shot some footage and captured it using PP4. At that point I was able to view and edit my mpeg files no problem. Just recently I sat down to get back to editing and received the aforementioned error code.

Since then I have read these forums thoroughly and have tried various things...

    Ran the latest PP4 update

Pointed all of my files back to the source file

Wiped my project clean and started over

Converted my mpeg files to AVI

Still to no avail. The error code persists.

I understand that I am ignorant to this program and this is most likely a case of operator malfunction. Like I said before, I shot this footage last summer and am not quite sure what my original footage dimensions are. My best guess would be that some how these dimensions changed from my PP4 presets. So my question is, how do I find out what my original video dimensions are? And why would this change if I have not even so much as looked at the footage since last June? It was shot on a Cannon XH G1, and I believe I shot it 16.9 at 29.97fpsbut cant be sure.

Also, another oddity, is that when I reopened my PP4 project, an i-movie video that I was working on was in my PP4 timeline. Could that have something to do with it? Consequently the footage from the i-movie said "media pending". Nor could I view my mpeg files in i-movie.

It seems as though I am not the only person experiencing this problem. Can anyone help?

    Thank you for your time

P.S. If you do have any insight into my problem, can you please respond to me as if I was 4 years old. I am still learning the program and am having trouble understanding all of the lingo.

    First off, listen to Daddy.

Your G1 records on tape in standard definition DV Format. So the tape speed (NTSC) is 29.97. Your format is DV NTSC 720 x 480. Start off with a DV preset of NTSC 720x480 with 29.97 framerate. I'm not sure if your camera fakes widescreen or really records widescreen, so try 4 x 3 dimension and if your girlfriend is suddenly very leggy and skinny, decide whether that is how you want to picture her, or choose 16 x 9, which may not be as complimentary to her. You decide. You are a big boy now.

    Best from Dad...

    Anyone,

I sympathize with many others as I'm getting a similar error now using using CS4 Premiere.  In my case I was able to import "earlier this week" a flash file into Premiere CS4... now this same file fails.  I made a new fresh project and still end-up with the same error for my quicktime sequences and flash and yes they have different FPS from 11fps to 29fps and sizes.  It did work earlier this week??  I'm working on a Vista 64 using CS4 web premium.  Anyone have input as Harm is not answering the questions to us novice users...  I've used Premiere since 2002 and this is new to me....  That is the need to have all video sequences the same width/height as suggested by Harm.  I'm trying to build a video sequence for fmy amily which has varied input old tape, quicktime, flash and DV.  HELP needed for the lame as any input and suggestions are highly appreciated.  I would like to see resolution to this error!

I'm new to Adobe and have captured footage from a DV141HD tape.  I kept to original size as I need the best quality I can output.  Was originally working, then I discovered Bridge, Encore and some of the other programs that accompanied CS4 had not been installed on the laptop I have.  I selectively installed these only.  I restarted my computer but now when I open my project it does not recognise the media that was already there and when I attempt to retrieve it from the hard drive (Mac), it comes up with the above message:  File video dimensions (width/height) too large.

    Can someone please help???

I've got Premiere CS4. Could earlier successfully import MPG videos from my camera to Premiere CS4 without problems.

Now suddenly it doesn't work - "file dimensions (width/height) too large".

I am using the same camera, same size of video as before, Nothing is different, but it just doesn't work anymore.

    ?????

    anyone that can help??

    i'd be very very thankful!!

I'm on a mac by the way, just been 2 months since I bought the program....

    Welcome to the forum.

First, your Project/Sequence Preset MUST match your source footage 100%. If not, there will be issues.

    What is your Project/Sequence Preset?

What are the full, and complete details of your source footage?

If it used to work, obviously something has changed. These above two items should be looked into first. Maybe the wrong Project/Sequence Preset, or maybe different source footage? If the latter, you might need to convert that source footage to get it to work.

    Good luck,

    Hunt
