GH5 Firmware V2.0 '6K' Anamorphic not importing

Community Beginner ,
Sep 29, 2017 Sep 29, 2017

Unfortunately I am unable to import the new 6k 4:3 footage from the GH5 to Premiere Pro. At first I got a message saying it needed to download the newest codec drivers for HEVC, but after that it is still not working. When I import the video file via Media Browser, everything freezes and I need to Force Quit Premiere Pro...

Does anyone have any solution?

Thanks in advance!

Daan

Is this the brand-new firmware? Which offers some intriguing capabilities.

Panasonic (like DJI, some others) has been pushing the envelope of compression & encoding standards to get a lot of data recorded to disc fast enough to make the camera usable. Intriguing implementations of long-GOP options & such, as have the drone and vr/360 cam manufacturers. The NLE and other post-app people have been running hard to mod their apps to allow for smooth work with compression & de-encoding option not necessarily ... anticipated.

So ... as I'm still running the GH3, the 4 wasn't enough upgrade to get my dough ... I'm watching the '5' closely. Adobe announced a new updated version of PrPro at IBC in Amsterdam last week, but of course, they never announce the roll-out date until Bing! and the CC app tells you there's an update available. Maybe that will do better with this? Hope so!

Thanks! We just have to wait I guess. I'll make a download link available within the hour (if the uploading is working as planned.

Because the weather outside isn't as cooperative as I hoped, I quickly grabbed a shot inside. If it works at your NLE, please share!

This smaller clip did work, but with a lot of problems. A larger clip than 5 minutes is failing.

Oooh ... I'm home sick, but darn ... if I was at the studio right now, I'd be downloading and testing that clip out immediately ...

Sorry about that Neil

Weird it opens in Premiere Pro 11.1.2.(22) but here is what you see.

That's one screwed up GPU relationship there, is my guess ... between PrPro & the GPU with that media. I've seen that green garbage before with media that PrPro couldn't read & send to GPU correctly. Sometimes switching the render to software only has been effective with green garbage media, often ... it takes an update or patch.

Bet this will take the update/patch route.

Same here. GH5 6k, 1060 GPU, latest version of Premiere CC- won't import, it just crashes.

Haha exactly!!! I tried it with FCPX as well. It runs smoother, but not as good as I hoped. Davinci is taking a beat as well, so proxies is what I will be using from now on with these formats. 1080TI is also not willing to leave the footage playing. I transcoded it as proxies to 422 ProRes HQ, and now everything runs buttery smooth.
Maybe an update or patch will make sure the 'raw' file from the so called '6k anamorphic' is working with PrPro.
Let's hope for the best!

Glad you're working ... and yea, ProRes, Cineform, and DNxD/R with their wonderful intraframe structure just all edit SO much better than the long-GOP stuff.

And ... maybe that will get a patch or fix soon. Looking at how soon the missus will tolerate the budget for one of those!

I am not able to import 6k Anamorphic as well nor 4k 422 10bit Long-Gop. both codecs deliver the same problem. After hitting the import button the cpu goes up to 100% after Adope freeze and I can only stop that process using the task manager.

What can I do? I don´t want to transcoding the files, any idea?

As they've already dropped an info blurb about the next roll-out at IBC last month, sometime "soonish" they'll drop the next release of PrPro ... though they never say when exactly until bingo, it's "here". Maybe that will have this covered, or not ... no clue.

Any particular reason you have against transcoding? Especially curious as those files as they are dropped to card in the camera are really nasty format for computer/editing work. It's great for getting the max data to card fastest, but on the other end, yowza ... nasty things.

Dear Neil,

thanks for responding!

The reason is I don´t want to expose:

next month I have to do arround 30 hours of 4k recording lectures during a conference in Mexico. (I am from Germany)

This is the reason I bought that laptop to have the chance to finish those lecture videos for upload to the internet right there during my stay. My SD cards capacity as well my back up capacities are limited. I purchased now arround 350 gb sd cards (not for all-i)  and 6 TB for doublebackup.

I have only a limitied time for finishing the videos in mexico! This is the reason,  I thought about just putting the lectures toghether with the original files from the gh5, improove the framing, croping, colours and sound as fast as possible and export the videos as h264 for youtube or vimeo uploads...

thanks

Marc

Makes perfect sense, then. "Remote" work just isn't the same as sitting in a suite working away.

Would a "standard" 4k setting from that camera be usable? Simplifying things being one of my goals when working remote.

for the moment i think of just using the 8bit 420 long gop 4k giving the cpu some air to breathe!

But anyway the issue with the new codecs of the gh5 (4k all-i, 6k long-gop, h265) in premiere needs to be solved!

Yea. Very practical, get the work out first.

And very much agreed to your second point, the ability of PrPro to at least basically handle each camera's output is needed. However ... looking at what physical demands the high-K, high frame-rate, extremely compressed media puts on a computer, I'm not sure it's even close to realistic to expect the NLE's to be able to do their complex stuff with that media in real-time.

We have 4x GH5 cameras and none of the 6K anamorphic or Open Gate 5K media are supported right now in Premiere. And if they are--we and over dozen of our friends have not found any solutions other than transcode. This is something that needs to be address. Right now you can convert using Davinci Resolve and/or Cruncher

After thorough testing it appears Premiere 2018 does work with the GH5 6K Anamorphic and 5K open gate very well. We've been testing and using this since the release with no issues. Apparently my earlier version of 2018 was not final. Thx
