GPU Acceleration not available in PP CC 2019_01

Community Beginner ,

Hello

I own Dell XPS 15 notebook with Integrated Intel 630 and Nvidia 1050 Ti video cards.

Premiere CC 2018 worked with Nvidia card, but version 2019 started using only much slower Intel card. Timeline is yellow and CUDA is enabled, but searching the timeline is much slower now. I just spent 5 hours trying to upgrade/downgrade all possible drivers, including Dell's BIOS - with no result. What the reason to own extremely expensive notebook (over USD 2000) without possibility to use it 100%?

Do you have any estimates when this issue can be fixed?

Hi Jankr74,

Happy to help investigate this issue.

Have you had a chance to update the Intel and Nvidia drivers? Can you possibly confirm the driver versions you have tried?

Do you see a CUDA option for GPU acceleration in Project Settings?

There have been many changes around CUDA and various drivers. We do rely on partner support in some cases but we are actively working to improve this situation.

Here is how GPU usage looks like when I play 4K video in Premiere Pro 2019.

CUDA option is enabled in Project Settings

Intel Driver - 25.20.100.6471 from 10-Dec-18

Nvidia driver - 25.21.14.1935 from 01-Mar-19

I tried different combinations of drivers, but had no success. Premiere always uses Intel 630 instead of Nvidia

Unless you have effects on a clip that use the GPU in Pr, simply playing a clip involves no use of the GPU. You can of course search for the official GPU Accelerated Effects List,  but mainly it is color such as Lumetri, Warp Stabilizer,  and some other things.

Internal graphics chips often are tasked by the mobo with some CPU duties and so are not completely equivalent in use profiles with dedicated GPUs.

Please use the Nvidia control panel to determine the driver number.

Hi Jankr74,

Have you tried adjusting settings in the Nvidia Control panel?

How to make the nVidia graphics processor the default graphics adapter using the NVIDIA Control Pane...

More info on 3D settings:

In Nvidia Settings, Nvidia Control Panel> Manage 3D Settings you should have a program settings tab , then you should point to Adobe Premiere Pro.exe and select High-Performance Nvidia Processor instead of Integrated Graphics.

Make sure nVidia is the only option under Display Adapters.

I disabled the embedded Intel GPU in Device Manager.  Embedded GPU0 disappears in task manager (Performance) and the nVidia adapter is now GPU0.  However, it doesn't get used at all during rendering.

I hope you know that the GPU is not used for most general 'render' or export work ... the GPU is used for the things off the GPU Accelerated Effects List, such as Lumetri color work, Warp Stabilizer, some other things.

While the CPU is processing a sequence, as it gets to clips with GPU effects, it calls on the GPU to do stuff as the CPU is ready for it. And not before ... sometimes users expect Pr to simply use the GPU as much as the CPU. It ain't built that way.

If you have CUDA turned on, it'll get used where it can.  Performance monitors won't always show that usage, however.

Your GPU1 looks way better than mine.  My GPU0 is about 70% busy, GPU1 about 1%, CPU about 30%.

Hi jankr74,

Perhaps try this: In Premiere's Preferences -> Media, uncheck "Enable hardware accelerated decoding (requires restart)." This could be using the integrated Intel graphics to decode your clips and if it's not fast enough, might bottleneck your ability to scrub in the timeline. With this unchecked the Mercury Playback Engine will run on the CPU cores to decode your clips and you might see an improvement in timeline scrubbing.

Cheers,

Neil
