Gradient Wipe Video Transition settings

Does anyone else have issues getting it to remember the settings if you copy/paste the transition from one clip to another?

Every single time I do it, I have to point it back at my custom gradient image. Every single time I want to change the softness of the transition, I have to point it back at my custom image. Seems like it should remember which you're using. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

(To be clear, I'm talking about the Gradient Wipe located in Video Transitions, not the Gradient wipe located in Video Effects > Transition.)

While I don't use that transition, I believe what you see is what you get. Others may know more than I.
