How to Apply a Lumetri Color Effect in an After Effects Clip to a Premiere Clip.

Hello.

For my project, I’ve been working in both Premiere and After Effects (AE). Most of the color grading has been done in Premiere, using the Lumetri color effects. But, there are a handful of clips created in AE that were color graded there, also with Lumetri.

Now, I need to match the colors in some of the regular clips in Premiere with certain clips that were color graded in AE. What’s are the best and easiest ways to do that? I thought about just copying & pasting the color graded clip from AE to Premiere, but when I did that the Lumetri colors that were applied in AE did not transfer to Premiere.

I also thought about copying just the specific Lumetri color effect from the Effect Controls panel in AE and pasting it into the Effect Controls panel in Premiere. But that didn’t work, either. When I tried to do that, the option to paste was not available in Premiere.

So, what do you suggest I do?

Hey Mavo,

Effects can’t be copied between After effects and Premiere Pro projects, but you can use Dynamic Link which should solve your problem. Through Dynamic Link, changes made in the After Effects composition will update in the linked Premiere Sequence .Do you want to move the clip to Premiere or do you just want to copy the Lumetri Colour Effect?  You can right click on the clip you want the effect copied to in Premiere and select Replace with After Effects Composition. You can find more information about this feature here. Alternatively, you can also export your videos from After Effects and import them to Premiere, but that workflow would be lengthy and won’t give you the freedom to make changes after exporting.

Regards,

Ishan

Thanks for your input, Ishan. I need to copy/move just the Lumetri color effect information from After Effects to Premiere so I can use it with a few clips within Premiere.

The clips in Premiere that I want to apply the Lumetri colors to are different than the ones in After Effects. I just want them to have the same color grade.

For me, the easiest way is place your clip in v1, and ajustment layer in v2. Then right click your clip -> Replace with After Effects Composition. Just edit in after effect, no need lumetri added there and go back to premiere.

Hi, Eko. So, you’re suggesting I apply the Lumetri colors to the adjustment layer in Premiere?

In the past, I have used adjustment layers for color grading in Premiere. The only issue I see with this currently (if I understood your suggestion correctly) is that the grading was already created in After Effects and I need that same grading effect used for different clips I’m editing inside the Premiere workspace.

For corrections to work between Ae and Pr, you need to make sure the Ae color management is set to Rec.709/2.4. And then, you still might need to uncheck 'use linear color' options.

Neil's solution worked for me. This is under

File > Project Settings > Color > Wroking Space > Rec.709 Gamma 2.4
