How to Change Sequence Frame Rate without Modifying Effects.

Hello.

I have a sequence in Premiere for a project that will have a final runtime of just over ten minutes.

I already completed most of the edits at the original frame rate for the sequence of 29.97 fps (frames per second), which was the frame rate of most of the original, raw footage. I also have several video & audio clips to which I applied effects, especially adjustments to video opacity and sound volume to create fades and dissolves.

However, now I would like to convert the sequence to the more typical 24fps. But, after I go into the Sequence Settings box and change both the Timebase and Display Format to 24fps, I notice that the effects I had made to the clips have changed a bit. It appears the keyframes within each clip have shifted slightly within those clips. In some cases, it's just enough to cause those keyframes to fall outside the clip. Also, some of the basic cuts are slightly off.

I've attached a couple images of the sequence: One at the 29.97fps; the other at 24fps. In the 24fps image, I highlighted where the effects were unexpectedly clipped.

It is an inconvenient, though not insurmountable, problem. I may just have to just move the keyframes and cuts back to where I want them. But, I would prefer to not have to do that, if possible.

Is there some way to change the frame rate of an entire sequence while maintaining the location of all the effect keyframes relative to their position within their clips?

Hi there!

To change your sequence to 24fps without messing up your keyframes, here’s a simple solution: create a new sequence at 24fps and nest your current 29.97fps sequence inside it. This way, your keyframes won’t shift around.

But before you do that, I have a question: why do you want to change the frame rate to 24fps if your original footage is 29.97fps? Dropping 6 frames every second can make your video look less smooth. Usually, if you need to change the frame rate, it's best to first convert your footage from 29.97fps to 24fps. You can use Adobe Media Encoder for this—just set the frame rate to 24fps and choose “Optical Flow” for Time Interpolation. This keeps the motion smooth even with a lower frame rate.

Remember, there’s no “typical” frame rate—it all depends on what you shot with or if you have specific delivery requirements for your project.
