How to create a typewriter effect in Premiere Pro 2017?

I know this question has been posed with previous versions, but how is it for the latest version? Do you still need After Effects to do it?

After Effect is easy to do. Just drop the effect on the text.

In Premiere you can use the crop effect and reveal a letter one by one.

Actually, it depends on the font you're using.

The challenge with doing a type-on effect in PR is that your font must allow for a vertical line to separate the characters.  With the Typewriter Animation Preset in AE, that's not an issue.
