Is it possible to make a fill that only applies to the text area?

Hi folks,

I'm trying to make a Buzzfeed type video, and would love to figure out a (relatively) painless way to make text boxes with white text and a black background. I could do this easily with 2015, but on CC 2017, whenever I hit background, instead of filling in just the textbox, it fills the entire screen. Am I missing something crucial? I just want to make a box via area type and just fill that box, but no matter what I do, it simply fills the whole screen.

Okay, basically what I'm saying is, I can't figure out a way to have a background color fill in the text box underneath the text. When I check off the background property, it floods the entire screen. The fill option itself only applies to the text. I'm trying to make videos with white text and a black backdrop, but I'm wondering if there's a quicker way to make it than just manually making a black rectangle and typing over it each time.

t takes no time to make a rectangle and you could even make a template for it.

Make the box in the titler and put it behind the text.

I'm doing this in Premiere Pro 2017.0.2 (11.0.2). Select Title > New Title > Default Still. Draw your rectangle. In my case, the default fill was white, so at the right of the Title panel, I changed the fill to black.

Then I typed some text, which was black, so I changed the fill to white.

This took 30 sec. Does this not work for you?

@Disability Channel: You are right: checking Background does fill the screen with black — or whatever color. Thing is, it does so also in the Premiere Pro 2015.4 release (I just confirmed that). So don't check the Background box. Check the Fill box instead. My previous post shows how to get your black boxes with white text. Does that work for you?
