Issues with transcription text editing

I am using Premiere Pro 24.4.1 (Build 2). Win 10 64-bit PC with latest updates.

Editing transcription text seems to be confusing a LOT of users... myself included. Sometimes I can extract or lift without a problem, at some point it stops working and refuses to work.

Endless searches on line don't reveal anything workable. MANY Premiere users are confused by this. I've tried it all. Even enlisted chat support from Adobe. Unfortunately, that was futile.

I'm not experienced enough with Premiere's text transcription tools to say with certainty that this is a bug, but it seems to pass the 'scratch and sniff' test: 'if it looks like a bug and smells like a bug...'

Here's a workaround: I consolidated my edits by exporting to a new video. At the moment, that's allowing me to extract selected text, the way I've been expecting the tool to work.

      I laughed out loud once I looked closely at your screen name!

       

      Thanks for responding to Kevin's request.

       

      The whole process of the revised caption workflow, then speech to text, and then text-based editing had a sometimes steep learning curve. Moments, and yes, sometimes hours of confusion resolved as we figured out some detail we were missing. For example, I have filed bug reports only to later conclude that it was working as intended.

       

      And lift/extract has been one of the confusing functions. But the devil is in the details, and it is also possible that PR is choking on a bug.

       

      How reliably does the problem happen? Is lift/extract greyed out or active but does nothing? When it doesn't work, it doesn't work from the Text panel and from the Program Monitor?

       

      The transcription is in the project file, and I may be able to work around not having the actual clips.

       

      A screen recording might also work. Or perhaps even screenshots: one where it works and one where it doesn't.

      Thanks Kevin. I am using Premiere Pro 24.4.1 (Build 2). Win 10 64-bit PC with latest updates. I think this is a longstanding issue... reported by gobs of other users. I've already lost hours on it, so I'm not sure what will be gained by filing a bug report.

      Suffice to say, when working with a file that already has extensive text edits, there seems to be a point at which Premiere 'throws up its hands', and does a Hal... 'I'm sorry Dave, you can't do that'.

      My workaround involves exporting the video, then retranscribing the exported video. The entire process is still immensely time consuming, since Premiere's interpreation of what a filler word is seems to be limited to 'um'.

      I can send you the file I'm working on directly, but I don't want to post it online.

      To troubleshoot the issue, I would look at the media you edit. Are the media files very long? What is the format of the media? Which camera was used to acquire the footage? Let us know.
