Jerking on fast panning or moving

Explorer ,
Sep 25, 2021 Sep 25, 2021

This is not a premiere issuse as it does it on the raw footage when viewed on a computer but not direct to a tv.

Whenever i pan quickly either with my hand held camcorder and drone filming in 4k at 25fps it jerks when moving acrossa subject fast. Slow panning and slow moving forward it does not happen.

Even when i export to match the settings it still does it.

I have a fast graphics card and PC.

why can other people film fast subjects and this it does not happen?

Sample clip below shows how it is fine at the start of the clip then as i speed up it shudders.

Thanks for your help

Your clip is fine. What you are noticing is a combination of several factors.

Human eyes/brain can detect 'flicker' and motion up to around 50-60 hertz (times per second)*.

Film/TV trick your eyes into thinking 24/25fps is real by displaying each frame more than once to hide the flicker problem. On a TV your 25fps footage has each frame flashed onto the screen at least twice - now while this solves the 'flicker' problem you are still going to see judder in fast moving objects or fast camera motion. Cameras that have shutter speed set to around double the frame rate will give a fairly convincing motion blur that hides most of the judder of the low (25fps) frame rate.

Your 25 fps drone footage has a high shutter speed and there is almost zero motion blur on the shot (particularly the Harvester). Therefore you are going to see 'judder'. And it becomes more pronounced the faster the harvester moves across frame toward the end of the clip.

There are also certain pan and movement speeds that highlight judder … so most of the time you want your pans and movement to be slow enough to not see this or fast enough that the eye can’t pick it and motion blur helps hide it.

But why does it look worse on your computer monitor than a TV?

As I understand it - it may be because the refresh rate of your computer monitor does not match or is not a multiple of 25fps. Your monitor is probably refreshing (flickering) at 72 Hertz.

Others with more expertise in this area may have a better explanation.

I’ve attached your clip with motion blur added in (using After Effects). Have a look and see if this looks less ‘juddery' to you.
