There are several keboard shortcuts for audio transitions available. In the Effects/AudioTransitions bin, if you right-click an effect you can set it to "default".
In the Keyboard Shortcuts panel, type "Apply" in the search line. You see a number of options.
Some deal with applying the "default" audio transitions.
Some allow you to apply an audio transition from where the playhead is to selected area, or ... from the selected area to the playhead point.

The 'apply transition to/from playhead' does *not* work - it applies a fade to/from silence/black.

Is that the current Default transition?

Nope default transition is Film dissolve first video and constant power dissolve for audio

It says default: in order for it to work you need to set that particular transiton in the Effects to default.

The 'default transitiion' part of it is a red herring.
I stand by my assertion that it the 'to/from playhead' option (to emulate head/tail fade on Avid) is not fit for purpose.
If you use it to apply a transition, you cannot then adjust the alignment (there is *no* material on the A side - hence black/silence).
If you cut the transition and paste it to the same edit point then it becomes a normal transition, and alignment can be changed.
