MP4 and other file types importing with audio only - nothing is fixing this

Hello,

When I import MP4 files, it is only importing audio. When I encode them to new file types, I have the same problem.

I'm running Premier Pro CC - both verisons 2022 and 2023 and I'm having the same issue in both versions. I literally can't do my job and I've already scoured the internet and tried a number of fixes (details below).

Help would be hugely apprecaited.

Specs:

  • I am using a Macbook Pro M2 with 32gb RAM
  • There is 500gb free storage on the SSD
  • I am working from Google Drive folders (day job requirement) - I have ensured these are in Offline Mode, so everything is definitely 100% on the hard disk.

What I've tried:

  1. I have cleared the cache... a lot. When I do this, it sometimes fixes the issue. I can (usually but not always) import the files with no issues. But... only a couple of files before the problem presents again. It doesn't matter if the files previously worked fine, I'll have the same problem again if I am trying to important them into a new project.
  2. Variable frame rate - the footage is shot with a constant frame rate, so we can rule this out. I've now worked with Sony camera output and Canon camera output, both set to compatible formats. Still the same issue. Noting that when the files work, they work fine anyway.
  3. Re-encoding footage to ProRes or other formats does not solve the problem.

I'm at my wits end here. Why the actual banans is this happening, and why can't I fix it? Other than getting new editing software, HOW do I fix it?

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Thanks

By importing, do you mean when initially added in the Project panel, or when put on a sequence?

If in the Project panel, how are you importing?

If on a sequence, do you have a video track source target set?

Hey Neil, thanks for jumping in the help!

Importing, I mean any kind of importing, I've tried all the ways I know:

- via the menu, File- Import into Project Panel

- drag-drop directly into Project Panel

- drag-dropping directly into the sequence from Finder/ file explorer

Same outcome no matter which way unfortunately. Once the issue starts, it doens;t go away until I've done a complete reset, and even then not always. Even if the project already has video in it (the same file types I suppose it's worth mentioning), I'm getting the same outcome.

Interestingly, I've just done another clear cache + system restart, and a file I'd dragged in that didn't work, is now showing video. Fixed itself. I am seriousy at a loss as to what's causing the problem.
