Multi Language Closed Captions

I am trying to figure out if I can have 2 languages in the closed caption on a project that will live on the web.

It needs to have english to meet ADA requirements, but client also wants it to have Spanish.  So what is the best practice for doing this.  Would it be having english as an open caption and spanish as closed or can I have them both closed and let the viewer choose.  As I understand the videos will be hosted on Amazon S3

not sure if that has anything to do with what I need to do but, as I watch You Tube you can just pick a language for closed caption.  If I sound confused, that's because I am.  I haven't found anything on the net to explain it.  Thanks in advance for any pointers, I know someone other than me has had this issue.

The answer is "yes," but it depends on the details.

 

By Amazon S3, you just mean that is where the file will be served from? It is not the actual Amazon video service?

 

What player will actually be delivering your video to the viewer?

 

Youtube does not use embedded closed captions, but there are recommendations on what sidecar formats to use. The SRT export from PR does not support where the caption appears on the screen, for example.

 

In any event, if you have to deliver scc or other closed caption files, post back here. If you can live with srt, then you create two caption tracks in your sequence, one for each language. You can only see one at a time. Export that one as SRT, then enable the other track and export it. For Youtube, for example, you would just upload each file, and make them available on your video.

Thank you Stan, so if I understand you correctly, if they are hosted on YouTube, and we supply an SRT file for each language and upload the video and SRT files to YouTube then we'll have one video with 2 choices in language? 

I see that YouTube does the auto translate but I'm not convinced of the accuracy, do you know if we provide the English CC SRT file if their auto translate will translate from that ??

Thanks again, trying to find out what player they will use if they host it on amazon.

Right. In the settings for your video, in the Subtitles area, "add Lanuage," and upload the correct srt for the language you are adding. In the end, click the 3 dots to the right of the "automatic" option, and pick "unpublish."

 

There are 2 subtitle settings for the user: the CC button, which turns on or off, and the "settings" which include subtitles, and the various languages you offer. Unpublishing the automatic options removes it from the user's list - they'd see none, english, and spanish.
