Multicam sequence with Multitrack source sound.

Contributor ,

The Situation:

Production Picture: Shot with 2 cameras in the field, each recording 2 tracks in-cam sound.

Production Sound: Recorded on 8-track WAV files, talent recorded each on separate mics.

All production media has been synced into PPro Multicam Sequences.

The goal:

Picture: Edit in standard multicam fashion,

Sound: Have the ability to choose, per edit decision, from any one of the 8 source mics and 4 camera audio tracks via the Multicam Sequence.

So far we're unable to build a multicam sequence that can handle this coherently.

Verified: The multicam sequence is 12 tracks of mono sound, (4 from the cameras, 8 for the Production sound WAV file)  All tracks are discreet.

Although the multicam sequences does show 8 channels sound in the Timeline Panel's source tracks to choose from, and any track (or rather all tracks) cut into the edited sequence show the proper name (.wav [a1], .wav [a2]), any track we bring over is a mixdown of all sound sources.

We've been experimenting with the following:

- Timeline clip > context click > Audio Channels (to control in the timeline)

- Timeline clip > context click > Mult-Camera > Enable

- Multicam Sequence (bin item) > Modify > Audio Channels (to try different sound configurations)

- Building the multicam using Adaptive sound as source as opposed to split mono.

So far no set of permutations and combinations of setups and settings are capable of achieving what we're going for.

My multicam/multichannel notes are even more garbled than my audio notes, so I won't paste them here.

I do like to do the following, when prep time allows:

Make sync map (multichannel) sequence, with sep sound recordings. (Leave timeline tracks 1&2 empty)

Route audio so that half goes to output 1 and half to output 2 (if all ISO mics, otherwise production mix to 1&2)

All Isos then routed to outputs 3-n.

Add PIPs (and burn-ins) to each video to make multi-viewer

Export multi-viewer with multichannel audio

Import MV and place on top video track & audio tracks 1&2, remove PIP & burnins from lower tracks. Mute audio tracks 3-n.

Enable this sequence as multicam.

Editing can now be done with real time multiviewer  and production/guide mix from camera n+1. Easy to keep an eye on sync & switch to alternate audio tracks.

the multiviewer is also v good for production to log

May not work for you, particularly if you have to turn over AAF with original sound files, but works well for me.

I recommend starting over, using the following method.

Manual Multi-Camera Method

For step 4, select only the video portion to Enable.  This will leave all audio tracks coming through for later editing.
