Only getting audio when I import a video MP4 file into my project bin. Help!

Only getting audio when I import  a video MP4 file into my project bin. I edited and exported the original MP4 files myself on the same computer on the same premier pro. It seems I only have this problem with large MP4 files 8GBs and up.

The solutions i've read on adobe and other forums are for the opposite, they get video but video but no audio. Either way I've tried what they said and nothing. Greatly appreciate some help.

Thanks,

Miggs

This was originally happening to me a few versions back. The way we solved this was to re-encode to the same and/or a different format. If you are getting no video--its possible that the video codec is corrupt on those files. I would re-enocode as test through MPEG Streamclip if Media Encoder is not reading those files either. As I remember in our situation, the larger files were corrupted because the size was over a file size limit on a drive partition. I'm not sure what codec you are using in the MP4 (perhaps H.264). If its H.265, people are having issues with this codec in my profession. To review, here are some possible solutions:

  • Re-Encode using H.264 in Media Encoder. This will use an MP4 wrapper.

  • Re-Encode using Quicktime ( with Prores422 or Cineform YUV 10-Bit codec) in Media Encoder

  • Re-Encode using H.264 in MPEG Streamclip if Media Encoder is also not reading this file correctly.

For continued editing, MP4 is not the best option.  Export Cineform files instead.

I have the same issue.

When I try and import MP4 files into my bin, some of them get imported properly but the vast majority of them are audio only. They're still reflected as .MP4 files in the bin but the thumbnail is an audio thumbnail and only audio is able to play.

I've tried Kristian Gabriel's solution of re-encoding but it didn't help much.

I noticed that instead of importing 100 MP4 files into the bin at 1 go, if I did them in smaller batches of 5-10 each time, the success rate of import is slightly higher.

Everything worked fine previously and this issue has only just come up for me. I even tried importing files that I had worked on previously (and had worked perfectly fine) but they don't import properly anymore!

Please let me know if you've found a solution @big miggs, I'm at my wits end.
