Open captions - for work in progress

Dec 17, 2017 Dec 17, 2017

Hi,

I'm editing a film which has scenes in a foreign language. When I cut a dialogue scene in a foreign language, it's easier for me to cut it with subtitles on. So I usually create first some subtitles for the whole scene and then cut it with them, refining these temp subtitles as I go along.

In the past I would have used the title tool to create these temp subtitles. This time though I've used the 'Open captions' option, creating a layer for each shot (few minutes long).

Once I start cutting the scene and the caption layers though, I find that the captions don't appear as they should. Either they don't appear at all or they even show captions from another layer!

Is there any way to 'fix' this? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Looking at forums, I have found a solution for the problem: re-starting Premiere.

I hope though Adobe fixes soon this issue, as many people seem to have issues with the open captions.

Thanks

Hi zaja01,

Glad the issue is resolved by restarting the program. We shall keep an eye on this. Thanks for letting us know the status.

Vidya.

I’m starting a project in PPwith a similar workflow- but using Subbits app https://www.videotoolshed.com/product/subbits-subtitler/  to generate PNGs of the subs, for whole interview, from a timecode transcript. It does a ‘rough & ready’ job of breaking the subs between timecode.

It gives an XML to import to import & match the PNGs to the interview.

You can ’edit original’ on any PNG and amend the text.

It puts the sub text into ‘Description ‘ metadata so you can do a kind of ‘phrase find’ if you’re used to that in Avid. (That functionality has only just occurred to me - will be trying it out today!)

(It does also export to loads of different formats- inc closed captions.

Requires a bit of setup but the dev is very responsive. (This import transcript he’s written in for this project so it’s still being refined).

I encountered a similar thing and found restarting also brought the open captions back.  Not a perfect solution however.  Then I deleted all render files and I'm crossing my fingers that seemed to have solved the issue where the default text would reappear on the program monitor but remain the edited text on the caption screen.
