Over Exposed Footage!

So i have a video edited and needing to go out today, but Premiere Pro's new V22 update is now making it impossible for my to be easily colour corrected! When I edit the video I have it exactly how I want it to look, however when I go to export it. it is unbelievably over exposed. So much so that it is impossible to see how this could ever be a help, I will attach 2 different pics, the first one is Post-Render and the next one is Pre-Render.

I am fairly new to premiere pro, and I desperately need help as this video needs to go out for my company today!

The best way to fix this I have found is to go over to your video clip (not in the timeline but in your list of project files the project window) and right click the video clip follow by > modify > interpret footage > color managament > color space override > rec. 2020
All footage filmed with a newer cell phone does this unless you change this setting. Filming anything in Cinematic with my iPhone 13 pro does this. This is the only thing I have found that fixes it. After that you can properly add Color Corrections too.

This works of course if you are working in an HDR sequence and export. But not if you work a Rec.709 sequence, or need a Rec.709 export.

Hi there,
I've been dealing with the same issue and it's been driving me crazy. I'm an uber ametuer, but happened upon something that actually helped. When I went to 'export media' I clicked on the 'effects' tab within the export media window that pops up, and check marked the 'SDR conform' option which took it back to mostly normal, and then you can lower the brightness, soft knee, and contrast as well.  Then I also went to the 'video' tab in the export media window, scrolled down and changed the 'HDR Graphics white' to the 203 option. Hope this helps someone.

That can be made to work, but isn't what I'd recommend, as you can't see exactly what you're getting. You might need to make the export 2-4 times until you get it right.

So going to the file in the Projet panel, right-click/Modify/Interpret Footage, Override to Rec.709 is a vastly superior technique in general.

I am having the same problem. A buddy wanted me to sync some audio to something he shot on his phone. there is no color corrections or effects of any kind, and it shoots it out WAY over exposed.

As noted by others, there are new color management options in Premiere as of the 2022 version.

In the project panel, the clips in a bin have properties via Modify/Interpret ... check there for clip-based CM.

Then the Sequence settings dialog now has CM settings ...

The Scopes panel has CM settings found by right-clicking ...

And exporting has different options that you need to check the manual for anymore.

better roll back to version of PPro that actually worked for your shoots and exports.

if you hurry you can get it out today for your company.

good luck

: )

you can then become a mystery detective to solve the discrepency in color between the editing program versions and waste your life on that mission.

I think the others who have replied to this thread have concluded the issue has to do with color override. You don't need to go to the work of setting up your old version again....

Actually to be honest nothing really helped, (not through any of your faults, I appreciate you guys trying) it was just an impossible glitch or bug, or whatever it is that just made my life miserable for 3 hours straight! :') However what I managed to do is is composite it in linear colour (something I was told to turn off in one of the videos I watched about solving the issue(I already had it off)) and just colour correcting it again. it didn't get to the ideal look I once wanted it. but to be honest it just got to a point where as long as I can make the colours somewhat bright, and somewhat accurate, i didn't care anymore lol. I just posted it. it didn't turn out half bad but as I'm sure we all know, everytime I watch this video back all I can think of is how much I wanted to change on it!

Here's how it turned out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YIiC-ORAf8&t=1s

If you import the exported file into Premiere Pro, does that exported file still look overexposed on the timeline in the Program Monitor?

Yes, this is what I see...it is over exposed on the timeline on the export settings and over exposed after export however, on the editing timeline the video looks normal and colours are fine. I have not added a LUT on the export settings or anything like that. Please help.

Thank you
