How can I add my own shapes to the essential graphics panel? That is, if I want to , for example put a triangle or brace instead of ellipse or rectangle, how can I do that?

Peter,

The best quick reference to get started creating Ae mogrts ... and understanding what and why you're doing things ... is the Making Mogrts free ebook hosted (and given away) by Adobe. It was written by noted editor/everything Jarle Leirpoll and as he was having the Adobe team check it out prior to publication, they decided to buy it out and provide it to their user base.

I was the grammarian/spell-checker and a general tester for the writing of the book, and it was a blast working with Jarle. It's easy to understand, includes all the steps to do anything it discusses ... it's training from Jarle, who always wants to figure out how to get any particular job done fastest, most reliable, most repeatable, and ... without having to think any more than is necessary. And most importantly, how to continually reuse anything you've spent even five minutes in the making of it.

His other noted work ... the massive tome The Cool Stuff in Premiere Pro is simply the most in-depth and complete manual for working within Premiere made. Over 1200 pages in the real-copy book, though most people work from the ebook form. I've got both. And the lengthy Contents and indexes make it easy to find everything in that massive book.

Thanks Neil, I 'll definitely check out "The Cool Stuff in Premiere Pro".  Is Making Mogrts ebook a place to start not knowing AE at all? I've made several runs at AE and fallen flat on my face, but TBH, have not had (until now) a real reason to learn it.  Any suggestions on getting going with AE?

Yes, Making Mogrts is designed for those who've no prior experience with AfterEffects.

If you take the pen tool (default key 'p') and draw the shape you want, you'll create an Essential Graphics layer that contains the shape. You can also draw onto an already selected Essential Graphics clip in your timeline. If you'd like, you can save that shape as a preset and you can drag that out to other Essential Graphics clips in the future.

That's awesome! but.. couple things.

  1. I can't seem to find the "save the shape as a preset". Where is that?
  2. I can't draw :(.  Is there a way to bring in an existing svg or other graphics file?

No worries. It can be a lot!

Here is a YT tutorial that I watched that helped me get started on making some of my own custom .mogrt files with AE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG7m3j1X9hQ

That's an awesome video. Gives me more motivation to learn AE.

And.. for free, I learned that holding down the options key, I can drag a copy of my graphic asset while making a copy of it.
