Question

Premiere Pro Crashing consistently on M1 Max

Hey everyone,

I just recieved my new 14 inch M1 Max (32gb RAM) and I'm having a lot of issues with 2022 Premiere Pro crashes. I'm no expert in the software but essentially PP just freezes and becomes unable to scrub through clips/locate media. Can anyone give me some help? I imagine I haven't set something up properly.

Same here.   The beta version crashes consistently when I close the app.

Chiming in on this thread as well. Just received our new M1 Ultra Mac Studios but it's even worse. Premeire just doesn't crash, it locks up the entire OS, shuts down and reboots our entire systems. It always occurs when simply trying to watch a playback of a sequence. The audio will start to stutter, Premeir freezes up, then the OS completely shuts down and the Macs reboot. When it happens again, I'll come back and post the crash report.

Found a resolution, maybe, from one tech support person. Go to your
applications running program and see if you’re running the Apple silicone
or Intel version. If it’s running Intel, right click on that application,
get info, then change the default to always open Apple silicone. Restart
computer and try running then again. --

This was my last resort but if it's stops the crashing it'll have to do. To clarify for others with this issue, I think what MadPlaid means is to navigate to your applications folder, select the Adobe Premiere Pro app, the select 'Get Info' from the menu or 'Command-i' on the keyboard and check the box that says 'Open using Rosetta'.  This bascially forces Premiere Pro to run in intel emulation mode.

I have many of the same issues mentioned in this thread. The closest resovle has been by Adobe reverting me back to last years version. But that doesn't work with what I am editing and the current files I have from the 22 version.

After talking with over 20 techs and having them run the gantlent of "fixes" it is seeming like Adobe just doesn't care. Has no clue or won't bother with it anymore cause they cant fix it.

In unrelated but Adobe issues, LR is still not functioning properly from brush issues to lens calibration and combatability issues.

Months of M1 issues is making me think its time to find another program to use. And I would definatly contact them about getting credits back for the issues.

not a bad idea on credits back. I cant use it so why am I paying for the newest features if I cant use them? Yea I never got it resolved. I had to go back to older versions.

Same issue here, Premiere rarely EVER crashed on my 2018 15" i9 MBP in my 3 years of owning it.... But Premiere on my 16" M1 Pro generally operates better as far as playback, renders and exports save for some strange glitches every now and then.... but Premiere contstantly crashes and gives me the spinning wheel like 3-5 times in 5-8 hours every day. Such a shame.

Quick tip for those experiencing laggy playback, in my experience playing back at 1/2 or 1/4 quality actually bogs down the M1 Pro for some reason. When working with 4K footage I found that keeping playback at full resolution is smoother. I DON'T KNOW WHY.

The advancements Apple has made with ARM processors is exciting but it sucks that software developers lag so far behind, 1+ year to run natively and probably another year or two before developers can get it right, but by then Apple will have again completely "revolutionized" computers and the cycle will continue. I miss the old days when being an Apple fanboy was a good thing.

If I'm editting in Premiere Pro it means it is crashing. On my 16GB M1(2020) Mac Mini, I can't go more than 10 minutes without Premiere Pro unexpectedly crashing and I'm not doing anything remotely advanced or taxing.

Hi alexm22159400,

We're sorry to hear about this. Is it crashing while doing anything specific, or is it random? What type of media files are you working with? Also, if possible, please check if any crash logs are generated on the system. It can help us in diagnosing the issue properly.

Thanks,

Sumeet

Having the same issue as many others already described. M1 Max with Monetery, Premiere crashes unexpectedly but almost ALWAYS when i try to switch to multicam mode. Sequence settings in UHD 25fps, footage BM and ProRes. Also my SSD drive gets ejected when Premiere crashes.

Hi, obert,

Sorry, you are having trouble with your Mac and Premiere Pro. Did you say you are using BRAW? That is an unsupported format. What happens if you leave that specific format out of the equation and transcode it instead? Did you have any trouble in the past with this computer, or was it only after updating to macOS Monterey? Let me know.

Thanks,
Kevin

M1 Max MBP 64GB. Randomly crashes and also crashes EVERYTIME i click into the audio tab. Garbage application. Guess its time to finally learn FCP.

Sorry about that, Jonathan. Which "audio tab" are you speaking of? Export Settings? Anything else you can tell us? I'm beginning to suspect that most everyone experiencing trouble is on macOS 12.2 Monterey. I've noticed an uptick in cases since then. I wonder if rolling back to Big Sur or performing maintenance steps in Monterey (repairing folder permissions, erase and install, repairing disk permissions, repairing folder permissions) might help? I'll continue to investigate.

Thanks,
Kevin

I have a 16" M1 Max (64gb RAM) and PP2022 crashes constantly when it boots and during editing. I was using a 13" M1 MacBook Pro (16gb RAM) prior to this week and was having the same problems. I have resorted to using PP2021 which is much more stable.

Is there any news about getting a fix? I'm confused why Adobe released such a bug-ridden version of Premiere? I can't rememeber a more unuseable verison of any Adobe application in the last 10+ years. It's especially odd on the heels of numerous major Apple hardware releases....

Adobe Support-- please advise!

I've been using Premiere professionally for 15 years.  This is HANDS DOWN the worst, buggiest version I've ever had the misfortune to use.  This is not an exaggeration.  I don't even know if I'll be able to make it through this edit.  I'm using an M1 Macbook Pro and it can't play 1080 h.264 footage at 1/4th resolution without stuttering.  4k footage?  Forget about it.  All of this, by the way, plays like butter in other software packages.  Bringing in a MOGRT?  Nope, sorry, beach ball of death.  I have no interest in learning another editing package, and yet I'm pretty sure I don't have a choice anymore.

Exactly the same for me bro.   Im pulling my hair out.  Had support work on my Laptop for over 3 hours and he couldn't fix.  Tried Rosetta nothing.   Even the drop down lists lag by about 4 clicks before catching up.   So so dissapointed.   How do these companies stay in biz?  I can't believe I have to jump ship mid video project.  The question is, is Final cut any better?

Never heard back from you, SDD93. Been a couple of months now. How about a scene report, friend? What was the format you are having trouble with, please?

Thanks,
Kevin

MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021)

Chip: Apple M1 Pro

Total Number of Cores: 8 (6 performance and 2 efficiency)

Memory: 16 GB

Running Monterey 12.2 (up to date)

Premiere Pro 22.1.2 (build 1)
Sequence: 1920x1080 @25fps
Rec.709

The situation is terrible. Continuos crash, about every 5 minutes. Sometimes when it crashes, macos aks for assistandId login to input password. Even if I put in it, will crash after a few seconds, everything freeze, the only way is to hard reboot. For me it's unusable.
