Premiere Pro Freezes and Crashes When Alt Tabbing

I'm currently using the latest version of Premiere Pro as of now. Been having an issue for a few months already in which whenever I alt tab, it usually ends up freezing my pc, making my monitor go black for a few seconds, and then either crashing my Premiere or making the program monitor go black when I tab back in making me need to restart my Premiere.

My pc specs are

graphics card- 2080ti

cpu- Ryzen 9 3950x

ram- 64 gb of 3600 mhz ram

and I store all of my footage/assets/projects in a SSD

not sure why my premiere is acting up like this but hopefully adobe ends up fixing this sometime.

Hello, I come from the future, I found the definitive solution for this problem. Since version 14.4 in 2020 I have had this problem with all versions of Premiere onwards, I tried everything up to reinstall Windows and always the same thing happened... until I tried this: Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows 10.

Now I can edit without Premiere freezing my whole system.

I second this. Definitely HAG is the problem. Been testing this theory for awhile and this is also my conclusion for this problem. Turn out it's Microsoft's fault 🙃.

Decided to give it a try after i gave up months ago and made another Trial Acc. Even though i upgraded my CPU, Ram and saving cache on a M.2 SSD it still crashes. Disabling Mercury Engine doesn't help. It also happens at random times and not always. Its also not just Alt-Tabbing. When i open Media Encoder via After Effects and it opens its window > crash. When i just click on something else to open on my Taskbar > crash.

It also crashes my whole GPU, not just After Effects. My screen turns black and i have to wait for my GPU driver to restart.

On top of that, it also regulary fails to render my work correctly. While everything works fine in After Effects and Media Encoder Preview, after some time it just starts not rendering some compositions/parts of the animation i made anymore.
For example: I have an animated figure with Head, Body, Arms and Legs. The animation looks fine when i render it directly in After Effects. It also looks fine when i preview it inside Media Encoder. But when i export and render it, like halfway trough, parts simply disappear and it continues to render the video without the Head, Arms and Legs for example and only renders the Body and ignores the other compositions. I'm kinda assuming that both issues are somewhat connected.

I don't want to speak too soon, but I updated my AMD Chipset drivers yesterday and the issue seems (again, I say this hesitantly as I haven't tested thoroughly yet) to have gone away for me. This issue is definitely related to AMD and, I suspect, memory timing issues with 3200MHz ram.

So more and more people with Ryzen system had confirmed this. I think we're gonna need a bigger pool. Anyone having the same problem with the new Ryzen 7000 series? I doubt that'll be the case cus they moved to DDR5.

Anyway, in my case the crash is always 100% registered as a GPU driver crash. Tried both DDU and reinstall driver using fresh option (via Nvidia Geforce now). Problem still exist. I updated my whole creative cloud app to the 2023 version and no crash so far (less than 7 days). I'll keep this updated.

Btw can you tell us which chipset deiver version are you currently on?

Just whatever the latest chipset driver that was available from amd.com as of yesterday. The .exe I downloaded ends in 4.11.15.342

This seems to be a very nuanced issue. It previously only occurs for me when I had SLi enabled in the NVidia control panel. However, I now have it enabled and have not had any screen freezes when alt-tabbing out of After Effects, since updating my chipset drivers.

Same here. Reading people's hardware specs I'm thinking this could be a bug related to the AMD chip (especially 3xxx series chip) & Corsair RAM (I'm rocking a 3900X & 64GB of 3200MHz Corsair Dominant DDR4 here). One thing I noticed is if you turn off your RAM DOCP (this is what AMD call their XMP RAM profile), Premiere Pro will behave absolutely smooth without a hiccup. Then of course you paid for a 3200Mhz kit to only use the default stock RAM speed

(either 800MHz or 1600MHz I don't remember at the moment)

I'm running a 3960X Ryzen with 128GB of RAM, though I don't recall the brand. Was spendy fast stuff though ... sheepers ... anyway, it's running fine on my desktop. I'll have to check the brand probably tomorrow at this point.

I am also having the exact same issue, ive reinstalled drivers countless times and im still having this damn issue. Has anyone found a fix yet?

This could be a corrupted or simply not-properly-functioning driver, an issue with the OS installation/files, or ... a problem with the GPU itself.

I've known of several Resolve users with similar issues that swapped out GPUs with another similar one, and the issue stopped. So they sent their GPU back.

Then of course, the one guy who'd somehow decided to OC his RAM and perhaps even the GPU vRAM ... and when he returned that to 'normal' speed, all was fine.

The number of things that might be at issue here can be frustrating.

I have the same problem. Reinstalled Windows. Nothing is overclocked. Drivers always up2date. Literally every single other program works perfectly fine. Tried different After Effects Version. Tried countless of different Windows Settings and whatever. When i look at google how many people seem to have this problem there must be something Adobe can do about it.

I have the same problem, but using After Effects. The exact same symptoms, similar setup, couldn't find a solution so I keep shutting

it off and back on constantly
