Premiere Pro Preferences / Media Cache settings for all users in Active Directory

I am an IT-Admin at a school. Out PCs got a 265gb SSD and a 1TB HDD. Now, i fear that the Media cache will fill up quite quicky since it's default location is the user-Folder and lots of students will use the pcs to edit their videos.

First i thought, I'll just find and edit the corresponding preferences-file and deploy it via GPO. I've spent hours searching for a prefences-file or a registry entry, i even monitored file or registry changes but i couldn't find anything.

Apperently, there is no file that has media cache settings in C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Premiere Pro\12.0. Does such a file even exist?

Is there any other way to change the Media Cache Folder for all users?

Correct answer lucasow

I found registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Common 13.0\Media Cache. You can set DatabasePath and FolderPath.

I just tested it for Premiere Pro 2019 and it works fine for me:)

David P,

Though it is possible, for performance and stability purposes, it is not recommended to place the Media Cache on a network drive. We do not support this practice, sorry. Cache files should live locally for best practices.

You may need to set up a schedule to delete media cache on a scheduled basis to keep these computers from having to many of these files. Fortunately, when cache is missing from a student's project, It is rebuilt automatically.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thank you for your reply!

Just to clarify, I wanted to use the local (seconde) HDD for the Media Cache, not a network drive.

So there is no way to change the preferences (such as the media cache loaction) for all uses (remotely), is this correct?

Setting this location is something editors need to know.  It's not unreasonable to make this part of the lesson.
