Question

Premiere project file disappear from server after closing project

We have a team of 4 editors all working with the Adobe suite. we have a central server storing all the jobs and assets (including project files) which they work directly from. we have been working in this manner for almost 8 years without any issues, until recently when our network infrastructure had to change to improve security in a larger company.

the issue is that our Premiere project files have started disappearing from the server after the project closes (even after a save). we have checked recycle bin and the editors local machine for the project files but the most recent save and all autosave files (just before closing) cannot be located anywhere. the editor has seen the file disappear from finder right in front of them when the project closes.

can anyone explain what could be causing the issue from Adobe side or what could be happening with the files as they should not be disappearing.

Thanks

We have resorted to changing up our workflow, keeping all the assets and backups of the project files on the server while actually working on the project files locally and uploading the project file once a day or once the project is done.

with regards to the actual issue of files disappearing from the server, there is no solution in our current environment. unable to try admin accounts or switch back to old hardware.

We're suffering from the exact same problem - smaller company working on our own shared drives moved to a larger company with Synology servers and increased security etc and our Premiere projects have started vanishing at random. I actually had one vanish while I was working on it (maybe as a result of AutoSave) - so far we've not been able to find a solution.

the only solution available in our case was to take the project file offline and update the server when done. makes the process very tedious but unfortunately our only option. lots of oportunities for human error which i don't like, but we make do with what we have available. we still do not know the source of the issue, if that be security blocking something or the time it takes the network to do its security checks or perhaps something on the server.

Past Kevin's comments, that sounds like it might also be a Permissions issue ... as I've seen similar things happen before.

Hi R Neil,

i had also originally thought that could be the issue, but the user working on the files are the same user that created the files. would permission issues cause the file to disappear and not be located in recycle bin? how would a lack of permission to the files usually effect a project file?

thanks

Justin

I've had issues where Premiere could write but not access next session. Or thatbit couldn't properly save part of the project data, as it's stored in bits in several places.

Very annoying it can be if this is the issue as you may need to check several places.

HI @Justin30157975raav,

I read your post. You say that your project files are not found after upgrading your shared storage but it worked fine with your previous setup. If you can try a test file in the current version with your previous server (if it is still available) or test with another shared storage device or service (Creative Cloud, for example), then you can narrow down the possibilities of what's happening to those files. If it is not happening on the other device or service, then the problem is related to the new hardware. If not, you can file a bug here. I hope the advice helps.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

the main difference between old and new setup is the network infrastructure, we used to be a small team and setup but have been incorporated into a much larger infrastructure along with greater security protocols. we did upgrade our server as well a few days prior, but hadn't experienced any issues before the network changed. unfortunately the old server and network are not availabe to me anymore.

thanks for your reply,

Justin
