I record a lot of audio for courseware directly in PR because it makes my workflow really easy. The files that get created are very large (like 100MB for 30 seconds of audio). I've attached a sample 5 second file of what I get created automatically. Several questions around this:
1) My ouput required is 44100Hz and I use AAC for the format. Is there away I can have this saved like this when I record so the file is smaller?
2) Is there any way I can compress my existing wav files for the past 100's of clips I've done and my timelines will still work correctly. that is, I don't want to loose quality below what I ultimately export which is the 44100Hz and AAC above mentioned

Does it make the same size files if you record directly in Audition rather than PrPro?

I've never used Audition.

Audition has of course a different UI, but is pretty easy to learn compared to Pr or especially Ae.
It's easier for a lot of audio things anyway. And any track/stem worked on in Au can be sent to Pr. Any track or sequence in Pr can be sent to Au.
It's also very easy to setup and store a preset for VO recording with a full rack of audio effects. You can make a VO that is superb on capture.

For a simple voice recording, not sure you'd hear the difference if you converted to mp3, but if you're worried about it, but a large hard drive.. or do a test... I recently bought a 1 tb usbc drive for $40 from b and h. And to give some perspective, when I bought my avid in the early 90's, a 1 gig drive was about $1,000. Of course it was an offline only avid.

It's not the storage while working on the project, it's the long term cost of storing projects in the cloud as well as pushing them up and down. I'm must looking for an alternative that has similar quality.

You could save half the space by recording mono if you don't need stereo.

Great and simple idea, Richard...

Something's off. That 5 second file you posted is 1.6 mb. 30 seconds of that ought to be less than 10 mb. (Plus, 32bit float is probably overkill for for simple vo.)
