ProRes is the best choise.
Example, if you have a timeline and want to export it to Lagarith it will take very, very long time compared to ProRes exports that is hardware accellerated and thus exports very fast. I just exported a 1h 40min 1080p timeline in only 7 minutes. ProRes is way more integrated in the whole workflow making ProRes the better choise.
Lagarith is a good codec and was great to have back in the day, but it still comes in an AVI wrapper and Adobe gives all love today to the MOV wrapper making AVI kind of ancient 2024.
Try both and compare and see which one suits your workflow best.

I don´t know to be honest and it was a long time ago i attempted to compare the both. But the fact that ProRes for years have been and still is in most cases the standard/preferred codec for production companies, broadcasters, editors, etc, etc tells me that the codec is good and thus good enough for me. I did use Lagarith back in the day though.
You will probably find in-depth comparisons if you search on the web for it.

Lagarith as Averdahl notes is an old codec that hasn't been used much recently. ProRes is one of the main professional editing/post-production pass-off codecs.
